Strength and Power

pastor Inspirational

O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places. The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people. Blessed be God! Psalms 68:35

When you face a relentless enemy, who is out to destroy everything good in your life, you have to be strong. Indeed, just one moment of weakness and he will take advantage of the opportunity. How can anyone win against such an enemy? Who can be that strong at all times and in every situation? In fact, there is no one who could; at least not on their own!

When Moses sent twelve of the leaders of Israel to spy out the Promised Land, ten of the twelve came back with bad news — to paraphrase it, they basically said the people who were currently occupying the land that God had promised them were too strong to be defeated and their cities impenetrable. From their perspective, they had no chance of partaking of the blessings and promises of God because the enemy was too strong for them.

There were, however, two others who had gone to have a look at the land; Joshua and Caleb. These two had an entirely different outlook on the situation and brought back very good news to Moses and all of the people. These two proclaimed that they were well able to go in and possess the land. But what made the difference? They all saw the same land and the same fortified cities and the same giants.

Most people (in this case ten out of twelve or more than eighty percent) face life with all of its challenges and ups and downs in their own strength. So, when they hear a promise from God, they predetermine the outcome based on their own strength. Obviously, those ten men knew that in their own strength they did not have the power to possess the promises of God, so they just accepted that it could never be.

The Lord never expects you to be strong enough on your own to overcome the enemy or to have the power in and of yourself to possess the promises you find in His Word. When the Lord sent His people in to possess the Promised Land, He commanded them to obey His precepts and, through their obedience they would be strong and have the power of God to get them through all that lay ahead.

From the beginning of time, it was never God’s intention that man would go through life without Him. Of course, many choose that path and few there are that choose the straight and narrow way but it is, after all, a choice. The Lord will never force His way into your life, but He is always ready to help you when you call upon His name. The God of Israel gives strength and power to His people.

Do not try to make it through life (or even one moment) in your own strength or think that you have the power to possess the promises of God without His help. Time and again, Israel put the Lord to the test and mistook His grace for their own greatness. God alone is great and He alone is good. Any greatness or goodness has to come from Him. The same with strength and power, it does not originate with man but is a gift from God. There will always be giants and strong cities to conquer, but God will give the strength and power you need!
