The Goodness of God

pastor Inspirational

Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. Psalms 52:1

You certainly do not have to look very far to see examples of evil in this world. Not only that, you will find no shortage of those who will actually boast in evil. Indeed, much of what is celebrated and lauded as being “good” is, in reality evil. Isaiah warned about those who call evil good and call good evil. What they define as light is actually darkness. The more they consider themselves to be enlightened the more they show themselves to be blind.

Since the beginning of time, the deceiver has been twisting things around and substituting lies for the truth. And so it is today that most of the voices being heard are not voices of truth proclaiming the goodness of God but rather those who boast in evil. It is worth noting that David begins this Psalm with a question — why are you bragging about things that are not good? He directs the question to the mighty, the powerful people of this world, people who trust in their own strength, their own wisdom, their own self-righteousness.

Let’s leave all of that behind and enter the realm of God’s Kingdom. You do not have to go out of this world to escape all of that arrogant evil, you just have to choose not to be a part of it. You can be in this world and not be of it and that is God’s will for you today and every day. No matter how much evil there is in the world, there is more of God’s goodness! As it is with everything that is worth having, you must seek it out and not expect it to be the default. Even in this generation the goodness of God endures!

Some days, the goodness of God is so evident you do not really have to go looking for it. The Lord moves in such a mighty way that there is no denying His awesome power being manifested on behalf of His beloved. Perhaps an answer to prayer after persevering for many months or even years, waiting for His provision and the fulfillment of His promise. During those days it is easy to proclaim God’s goodness.

Other days, it does indeed take a real effort to keep your head up. Even though you are confident in God’s faithfulness to keep His word, still it just seems as if perhaps evil is winning this round. These are the times that call for walking by faith and confessing what you know to be true even though you have no immediate tangible evidence to hold on to.

Job experienced both of these times in his life. When everything was going his way, it was easy for the devil to accuse him before God of being faithful only because the Lord had given him everything he could want in this life. Then, there came the time when Job had nothing left. Nothing to indicate that the goodness of God was still a factor in his life. But through it all, Job never accused God of evil, because God is indeed only good!

That is the challenge you face on those less than perfect days; to see the goodness of God in your life and in the situations you face and the people you deal with on a daily basis. Remember that God is not tempted or in any way swayed by evil, He will only ever be good. Finally, rejoice that God’s goodness is not based on your goodness. It’s the goodness of God!
