Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’” Luke 14:16-17
Some meals are more significant than others; sometimes you may unceremoniously eat just because you need nourishment and other times are special occasions that hold great significance perhaps for you or someone you care about. Some meals are in fact so important that you will never forget them as long as you live.
Jesus had just finished sharing a parable that revolved around food, specifically a feast. It is not surprising that food is used for teaching lessons throughout the Bible. It is important to everyone to one degree or another for, after all, we cannot live very long without eating! Now, back to Jesus’ parable about giving a feast and who should be invited to this feast. As He ends the parable, He makes mention of the reward of the righteous. That brought about an exclamation from someone in the crowd about having a meal in heaven!
Then we come to our verses for today as Jesus shares a parable relating to one meal you do not want to miss — the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. To help put this in perspective, let’s look at it by way of a few questions. What if you had the opportunity to be a part of the greatest feast ever to be given and the Host of this feast is God? What if He invited you to be a part of this celebration and you would, in fact, be an honored participant? What could possibly be so important in this life that would cause you to reject this invitation? How busy would you have to be to be too busy for the Lord who created you and redeemed you?
This is literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience yet, amazingly enough, everyone began to make excuses as to why they would not be attending. These people received a special invitation to this great heavenly feast and they make an excuse not to go? That’s right.
What is more important than your relationship with the Lord? You would probably say that absolutely nothing is more important than the Lord. Those are the right words, but how does your life line up with your confession? In our parable, everyone had an excuse; something they put ahead of the Lord. One’s excuse was that he had to go look a piece of dirt. That’s right, he bought a piece of land and he had to go look at it. Another one’s excuse involved some oxen or, to modernize it a bit we could say he just bought a tractor and had to go take it for a test drive.
If your life or your business has you too busy for the Lord then you are too busy. You are not going to take any of these things with you when you leave this world. Finally, we have an excuse relating to family; someone said they could not join the feast because they had gotten married. If you are trying to build your life on a foundation other than the Lord and His Word, then you are building on shifting sand.
Ask the Lord to show you if you have been making excuses instead of being faithful and committed to Him above all else and, whatever you do, don’t miss this meal!
