Opportunities to Do Good

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10

Since this verse begins with therefore, it is important to know what it is there for! In the preceding verses, the Apostle Paul has been teaching us some principles concerning sowing and reaping, ending with an exhortation not to become weary in doing good. The season will come for reaping what you have sown and when you sow seeds of doing good you are going to reap a good harvest. It will come back to you pressed down and running over. The blessing will be multiplied back to you!

But, why would there be a possibility or even a tendency to grow weary in doing good? For one thing, sometimes the due season for reaping the fruit of doing good is not immediate and it could be that the good you do is going completely unnoticed at the time. Add to that the fact that it is not exactly natural for your flesh to want to do good for others instead of concentrating on your own needs or wants. That sounds selfish because the flesh is selfish by nature.

When you are thinking of someone else’s needs and doing things for the benefit of someone else without regard for what you stand to gain from it, you are doing good. It might not seem as if anyone (especially the recipient of the good deed) appreciates what you are doing, but you can be sure that there is One who sees and remembers — the Lord. Not only does He see and remember but He also rewards those who do good.

Jesus said that God alone is good and the Apostle Paul said that there is nothing good within us so, the source of any and all good in you is the Lord. The more you make yourself available to His will, the more opportunities for doing good will come your way. It could be things that seem like a part of your normal, everyday life, but doing good is God’s love flowing through you to touch someone else’s life and heart.

You don’t have to go looking for opportunities to do good, you just have to be a willing vessel and the opportunities will find you. To prevent weariness setting in, it helps to put all of your expectation in the Lord and give of yourself in doing good expecting nothing in return. To put it another way, trust in God’s goodness toward you and put your faith in His Word so that you know you are in His hands; He will take care of you and provide for you. When you have that outlook on life, you are able to do good to others (allow God’s goodness to flow through you to others) because you are filled with His goodness and faithfulness. After all, you can’t give someone something that you do not have yourself!

What if no opportunities for doing good present themselves? If you are following in Jesus’ footsteps, you are doing good to others without even realizing it because it is not something you are doing out of obligation but from the heart. It is not something that you have a daily quota to fill and therefore have to go looking for people to help, just be the hands and feet of Jesus and it will happen. Others may not notice and you may not even be aware yourself, but you can be sure God sees and remembers when you do good!
