His Glorious Voice

The LORD will cause His glorious voice to be heard, and show the descent of His arm, with the indignation of His anger and the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, tempest, and hailstones. Isaiah 30:30

Usually, you will hear from the Lord by spending time with Him in His presence and with His word. He is always there for you and, by the finished work of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit, there is no veil between you and His presence; you have access to the Father. When God spoke with Moses, He spoke to him face to face. But, when God spoke to the children of Israel, it was another matter altogether. The Lord’s voice thundered from heaven so that they were afraid to even hear his voice and wanted Moses to speak to the Lord on their behalf.

Elijah had a number of supernatural encounters with the Lord and one of the most notable was when he challenged all of the false prophets of Baal. During that challenge, God really showed up when Elijah stepped out in faith and God answered him by fire; lots of it. The Lord consumed the offering Elijah had placed before Him as well as everything around it. This got Israel’s attention (at least for the moment) so that they all cried out, “The Lord, He is God!”. Sometimes God’s people need to experience the glorious voice of the Lord.

It is very significant then, when Elijah is hiding out in a cave a few days later that the Lord pays him a visit. God tells him to go outside and stand on the mountain — the Lord has something to say to Elijah. The Lord passed by Elijah and a strong wind began to break the rocks into pieces. But the Lord was not speaking to Elijah in the wind. Next came an earthquake, but the Lord was not speaking to Elijah in the earthquake. Then, a fire was kindled by the Lord, but neither was He speaking to Elijah in the fire. He spoke to Elijah with a still, small voice.

Some people need to hear the glorious voice of the Lord to realize He is there, and God will not hesitate to manifest His presence through the wind or fire; He will even shake the very foundations of the earth if need be. But, if you humbly draw near to the Lord, you may hear more of a whisper than a whirlwind. The Lord can be loud, but He doesn’t have to be!

Jesus declared that His sheep heard His voice and followed only that voice. That is what the Lord wants for your life; to know Him so intimately that even a whisper or a glimpse is all you need to recognize the divine presence of your Redeemer. To be so familiar with His voice that you recognize it immediately and can spot a counterfeit not because you have studied counterfeits but because you know the voice of the one true God so well.

Yet, there are times when the glorious voice of the Lord needs to be heard. When you are presenting the Lord to those who are seeking, it will many times take more than a whisper for them to hear. Some have heard the Word of God and know about the Lord but have never yielded to Him. God knows what is in the heart of everyone and He knows just what they need to hear and when they are ready to hear. It could be a still small voice but it probably will be something that even the spiritually deaf can hear — His glorious voice!
