From the End of the Earth

Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalms 61:1-2

As a Christian, there are times when you feel really close to the Lord. It’s as if He is right there with you. The time when you first heard the Gospel of Christ and accepted the wonderful gift of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus would certainly fit into that category. As you began your Christian walk there were doubtless times when you knew that the Lord was walking with you every step of the way.

There may have been times when you prayed and it seemed as if you had a direct line to heaven for, no sooner than you had uttered the prayer the answer came! You may have had instances when you were speaking to someone and you just seemed to have the right words to say at that moment, and you knew the Lord was with you.

There have surely been times in a church service when you felt the Lord’s presence so strong you would not have been surprised to see Him there in the sanctuary or, at the very least, a multitude of the heavenly host praising God along with the congregation!

But, if you have traveled much of a distance on your journey with the Lord, you may have found yourself in a situation like David is recounting in this Psalm — where he feels as if he is at the end of the earth; as far away from God’s presence as you can get. Here, there is no visible sign that God is anywhere to be found. David cannot see any indication that the Lord is there with him, so he does all that can be done in a place like that; he cries out to God.

It is important to remember that we do not walk by sight but by faith. When God first created everything in our physical world there was nothing to see, nothing to indicate what was to be. It all came into being because of God’s words. God said, “Let there be light” and there was light. It did not matter what the current condition of things was, what mattered is what God said was going to be.

What can you do if you find yourself, like David, at the end of the earth? This is a place where it seems you are as far away from God’s loving care as you can get. This is a place where your heart is literally overwhelmed; as if you are covered in darkness. What can you do if (or when) you find yourself at the end of the earth? God’s Word provides the answer.

As always, you must have faith. Even though you cannot see any indication in the natural that God is attending to your needs, you must believe that He is attentive to your prayers and that, if you cry out to Him, He will answer. There is no place you can find yourself in that is beyond earshot or beyond the reach of El Shaddai, the almighty God!

When you cry out to God, He will hear your cry and He will deliver you. There is a place of refuge and peace in His presence and He will take you there even as a storm is raging all around you. God will be the light in your midst even as you are surrounded by darkness. He will lift you up and set you on the Rock, which is Christ. Even from the end of the earth!
