Stand Still and See

And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. “The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14

What should you do if you find yourself being pursued by all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army hot on your trail, and there you are at the bank of the Red Sea with no way forward and no way back? In a word, you are stuck in a situation with no way out.

The Children of Israel found themselves in just such a situation and, unfortunately, did not exactly handle it as they should have. When they saw Pharaoh’s army almost upon them, they were afraid and they responded out of fear and a lack of faith. They cried out to God, but it was not to proclaim His faithfulness and declare His power and authority and lovingkindness; it was to accuse.

Because they were walking by what they saw instead of walking by faith, they proclaimed their defeat and the enemy’s victory while they were still safe and sound in the camp of the Lord. It is important to remember that they had not just wandered out to this place, but had been led there by God Himself. His presence had been going before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

It’s one thing to get yourself into a mess (and the Children of Israel surely did that on more than one occasion) and need to get back to the place where you left the Lord’s path and get on the right track. But in this case, they were right where the Lord wanted them to be; He had led them here and allowed the enemy to pursue them, but He was not about to abandon them. The Lord is preparing to do something really awesome, but before the victory is the battle, and the bigger the battle the greater the victory!

Sometimes, even when you are right where the Lord wants you to be and you see His hand of guidance and protection manifested in your life every day, just as He went before the Children of Israel in that pillar of cloud and pillar of fire, you may see the enemy pursuing you and trying to overtake you. That should not be a surprise to you and it certainly is no indication that the Lord has abandoned you, for the enemy is always seeking to steal, kill and destroy anything he can get his hands on.

Instead of looking for a way out and talking about how bad things are and how strong the enemy is and how hopeless your situation is, remember the words of the Lord, remember His faithfulness, remember how He saved you and led you this far by faith, remember how He has always provided just what you needed when you needed it, remember how He has cared for you and, when it seemed as if you could not go on, He carried you. There are times when you are where God has you and you have done what He has given you to do and yet the enemy is at your door. If you look at things with your eyes, it will seem as if the enemy is winning. That’s when it’s time to stand still and see God’s deliverance.
