The Lord Never Sleeps

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Psalms 121:2-3

One way of “falling down on the job” is to fall asleep when you are supposed to be awake. For some jobs, the consequences may be seemingly inconsequential while for other occupations, an ill-timed nap could be catastrophic. If you are a watchman and your job is, obviously, to keep watch, then you could not do your job if you were not only awake but also alert. An air traffic controller cannot doze off at work without putting hundreds of lives at risk. At any given time on the road, day or night, there will be drowsy drivers. Many accidents are indeed caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

In the Bible we see some examples of people being asleep when they should be awake and we also find wakefulness and alertness being related to our spiritual well-being. Samson was one of the judges of Israel during the time of the judges, He was also a very strong man when it came to physical strength. Many of his physical feats are documented in the Bible, but besides his last one which was to bring down a coliseum, the most extraordinary example would be one involving a gate. In the sixteenth chapter of Judges, we see Samson taking hold of the doors of the city gate at Gaza along with the gateposts and the bar that secured the doors and putting all of this on his shoulders. When you think of a gate, you are probably not thinking of one this massive — it was probably at least ten feet tall and just as wide. It would have been built to withstand an invading army which would mean that Samson was carrying five to ten tons of weight on his shoulders and he carried it probably over thirty miles and to an altitude that rose at least three thousand feet. That would be a challenging walk even without the weight! But, in spite of his strength, Samson fell asleep when he should have been awake – lying in Delilah’s lap.

Peter, James and John fell asleep at just the wrong hour — when Jesus asked them to watch and pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. How many times had they (especially Peter) fancied themselves as the greatest of the twelve. Then, there was that time that James and John asked Jesus to let them sit on either side of him in glory! Anyway, here are these three super disciples left with a seemingly simple task, but alas, He returned to find them asleep; and not just once. It can happen to anyone at one time or another, but not to our God who is always watching over us. He never sleeps.

You can rest assured that the Lord neither slumbers nor sleeps. Sure, even the strongest man on earth may have moments of drowsiness and those who are the closest to Jesus may doze off when they have been called upon by Jesus Himself to remain awake, but the Lord will never be asleep or be caught off guard when you need Him.

Your faith and trust are not in a person but in the Lord, who made heaven and earth; He made you, too. You may have fallen asleep spiritually at some point and realize how easily it can happen. You may have even dozed off while driving which can happen before you are even aware of it. These things happen to people, but not to God. He is ever watching over you and listening for your prayers. And what are His hours? The Lord never sleeps!
