Beyond Doubt

He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him. Psalms 126:6

You have, no doubt, heard of “doubting Thomas” haven’t you? After Jesus had risen from the dead, He appeared to His disciples, but Thomas was not present at the time. Later, when they were recounting the appearance of Jesus in their midst, Thomas doubted what they were telling him and declared he would not believe it unless he saw Jesus for himself and even touched His wounds to be sure it was really him.

Doubting goes all the way back to the beginning. The devil deceived Eve into doubting God’s perfect provision for them in the Garden of Eden and so she disobeyed God’s explicit command not to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

God made a promise to Abraham and Sarah concerning an heir. The covenant with Abraham was very straightforward and there could be no doubt about what God had committed to do on His part. Unfortunately, Abraham had a moment of doubting and ended up with an Ishmael before God, in His mercy, blessed him with Isaac.

Time and again, the children of Israel doubted God and put a voice to their doubts with their complaining. They doubted God’s plan for their deliverance in general and specifically whenever anything did not go just the way they wanted it to.

There are also plenty of other examples of doubting when it came to Jesus’ ministry on the earth. At the tomb of His friend, Lazarus, everyone thought that Jesus had arrived too late and they all doubted that there was anything that could be done. Lazarus had, after all, been dead four days!

The disciples had some doubts about Jesus’ care for them as they were in a storm-tossed boat thinking that they were about to drown. All throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry He faced doubters.

With all of these examples in the Bible (and there are plenty more!), how can you move beyond doubt? You have doubtless faced situations in your life that would be good candidates for causing a doubting moment, but it is possible to move beyond doubt. In each of the above-mentioned cases, the doubters could have been doubtless.

The key is not the circumstance but who God is in your life. When someone says they have seen Jesus alive when you know He had died, you could doubt that was true based on the circumstance — if someone has died, they are dead. But, because you know the Lord and you know He said He would be raised on the third day, your knowledge of God and faith in Jesus takes you beyond doubting to believing!

You may have plenty of circumstances in your life that could cause you to doubt, except for one thing; you know how good and faithful God is, and that takes you beyond doubt!
