Waiting Patiently

I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. Psalms 40:1-2

Some things are worth waiting for and then there are other things that are not. In fact, some things are just not worth anything when it comes right down to it! Unfortunately, we occasionally get things turned around and lose sight of what is and isn’t worth the wait and what should or shouldn’t have value in our life.

King David begins this Psalm with, of all things, waiting. Then, he takes it a step further and specifies that he not only waited for the Lord, but he waited patiently. It is one thing to wait because you have to wait; it’s not a choice but something you have to do. It is another thing entirely to choose to wait because you deem something as being “worth the wait”. This is what causes you to wait patiently, because of the value or importance you place on that which you are waiting for.

In this case, David is waiting for the Lord, and if there ever was something worth waiting for, it would be the Lord. So, as David goes through the ups and downs of life, he is patiently waiting for the Lord, for he knows that God is going to come through for him as He always has and as He has always promised to do.

As is constantly the case with your relationship with the Lord, there is your part and then there is God’s part. You cannot do what only God can do for you and He will not do what you are called and commanded to do by Him. So, as we break these verses down, we find both your part and God’s part which applies to every aspect of life.

First, what are you to do? Wait patiently for the Lord and let Him hear your voice crying out to Him. God knows what is in your heart and He also knows what you need even before you know what you need! Still, the Bible way to receive is to first ask, and to find anything requires seeking it. If there is a door that is shut, even if it is one the Lord has said He would open for you, still He says to knock on that door. Don’t just wait around for the Lord to do something and not say anything to Him about it, assuming that He already knows anyway so why bring it up! Say what you are waiting and believing for.

And the result of waiting patiently for the Lord and crying out to Him? He will lean in to listen. How wonderful to know that the Creator of heaven and earth is attentive to your prayers and when you call upon Him He always hears. Not only does He hear you but He responds to your need. The Lord will pick you up out of the mess you are in and give you a solid foundation to be set down on. All of the uncertainties of your life that have caused you to stumble are replaced with an immovable rock to stand on. But there’s more; not only does He establish a place for you to stand firm, He also establishes a solid path for you to press on with Him.

The entire process begins where we began: waiting patiently for the Lord!
