“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
What about tomorrow? What will you do? Where will you go? What is the weather going to be like tomorrow? What about the lives of those you care about; how will things be for them tomorrow? What will be the local and state and national and world news tomorrow? When it comes to the subject of tomorrow, there is no end to the questions that could be asked and wondered about, but what about answers to those questions and unknowns? They are all exactly that — unknown. The details of tomorrow are unknown to you and I but not to the Lord; He knows everything! But, just because He knows something, it does not automatically follow that He is telling. Tomorrow is there for a reason, just like today is here for a reason.
This teaching that Jesus is in the middle of here is not so much about tomorrow as it is about trusting God and not worrying about anything. Tomorrow represents everything in your life that is an unknown or that is beyond your ability to do anything about. Tomorrow is a great way of understanding the truth Jesus is teaching, for tomorrow is only a day away and yet it could just as easily be one hundred years and a thousand miles away for all we know about it.
Jesus uses things that can be seen throughout the natural world to make this spiritual point that relates to your life in this world. There is much evil all around you and yet your heavenly Father is watching over you even when you are not aware of His divine care. Jesus uses the example of the birds of the air; how they are always fed even though they do not plant a garden and reap the harvest — the Lord feeds them.
Then, He paints a beautiful picture of a field of lilies who exhibit more glory than could be bought with all the money in the world. They don’t worry about how they will grow or if they will bear beautiful fruit or even any fruit at all. They, like the birds of the air and like all of God’s creation, are in the hands of the Lord to do with as He will.
It’s hard sometimes (Sometimes? Maybe more like all the time!) not to worry about things that you cannot control and to let go of things that are not intended to be under your control. The Lord taught Israel a valuable lesson by feeding them with one day’s portion of food every day (except for the double portion for the Sabbath day) and that was that they were to depend on Him continually for their very life. He is still teaching that lesson today for anyone who is willing to listen and to let go!
Are there things you are holding on to that you need to let go of? Things that you cannot do anything about because they are beyond your ability to do anything about them. It is not God’s will for you to worry; that is clear from His Word. Therefore, if you have something you are worrying about then you have something you need to give to the Lord. There is plenty for you to do today without taking on the extra load of worrying about things that are not on your God-given agenda. But, what about tomorrow? Don’t worry about it!
The entire process begins where we began: waiting patiently for the Lord!
