Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” so the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the people had revenge upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. Joshua 10:12-13
A lot of days just come and go before you realize it and time seems to take wings and fly away into the past, never to pass this way again! Then, there are days that appear to drag along with no end in sight, but eventually, those too will come to an end. In our verses, Joshua finds himself in a battle against five kings but, the Lord is on his side so, no matter what the odds are in the natural, you can be sure Joshua is going to come out victorious.
Before everything is said and done, this will indeed be a day like no other. God had reassured Joshua that he would win this battle even though there was little to no chance of that happening if you were to look at the numbers in the natural — Joshua and his men were so outrageously outnumbered that they did not stand a chance. But, when you factor in the Lord, that changes everything.
One thing that made this day so unique was how the Lord helped Joshua in this battle. Besides giving him a word of victory, the Lord also went into battle with him. One of the one-of-a-kind occurrences on this day was the Lord casting down large hailstones from heaven (verse eleven). In fact, more of the enemy were killed by hailstones than by the sword that day!
The other unique aspect of this particular day was that time stood still. That’s never happened before or since. And, it wasn’t just because God decided to do it and it was done; this was at the word of Joshua in the presence of all the people. The sun and the moon stopped and stood still for about a whole day! That would certainly qualify as a unique day.
It can be hard to pin down time. Young people often can’t wait to get older and would hasten the passing of time if they could. Sometimes when stating their age, they will claim their next year’s age instead of their present age: “I’m almost six” or “I’m going to be fourteen in a few months”. Then, as those children grow up to have a family of their own, they will wish they could stop time and keep their children as they are; but time does not stand still, today keeps becoming yesterday and time goes on. Eventually, those same children who could not grow up fast enough will wonder how the years came and went so quickly, like a sigh time goes by.
Time stood still once, but it’s back on the move again. You can’t stretch it or slow it down, you can only make the most of today, for today is the only time you have. Today may be one of those days that you would like to hold onto forever or it could be one that you can’t wait to see come to an end. Remember, if you will give this day to the Lord there is nothing He cannot do with it, for nothing is too hard for Him. Remember when time stood still!
