A Bottle of Tears

You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book? Psalms 56:8

This is a verse from a psalm written by King David when he had been taken by the Philistines. It is obvious from the beginning of this chapter that this is a trying time in David’s life. He speaks of evil people oppressing him all day every day! They hound him, they fight against him, they twist his words, they are constantly plotting evil against him, they gang up on him, they hide and lie in wait to destroy him.

It is hard to imagine (or maybe not so hard) that people could be so intent on doing evil toward God’s people that they would constantly be thinking of ways to do harm to those who follow the Lord. In fact, much of what David faced in his day can be seen first hand in the world today. So much grief and sorrow are the result of the choices people make to serve the enemy and be a vessel for evil, both in words and deeds, against God’s children.

The thing that brought David through these trying times is that he knew God was for him. This is vital for you to remember when you consider all of the trials in David’s life and all of those who were opposed to him even though he was a “man after God’s own heart”. He put his trust in the Lord and kept his song of praise in his heart.

When your heart is filled with praise, there is no place for fear. Even though there is evil all around you, your praise rises above all of the things of this world and ends up in heaven at the very throne of God. Whenever the Lord hears one of His children praising Him, He is right there with them. Praise will always bring you into the presence of the Most High God.

Still, in this life, there are going to be times for tears. David, in the midst of his song filled with faith and praise to God also sings about his tears. It may seem as if someone who has faith would never have tears, but that could not be further from the truth — even Jesus wept while He was on this earth as a man.

You may find yourself at times dealing with people obviously set on doing evil and hindering the will of God at every turn. It may even seem as if the whole world is against the Lord and His Anointed. That is literally the case when it comes to this world; it is under the sway of the evil one. But, the Lord is always there with you and for you!

What good, then, are tears? They provide a pathway for the hurt and brokenness that is on the inside to be released. But those tears are not lost; they are kept in a bottle God has for that purpose and they are recorded in His book. The Lord has a bottle of tears and a book of tears.

He knows what you are going through and He welcomes your tears. Jesus has been there (or here, as it were) and He has felt what you are feeling. He is praying for you, interceding before the Father on your behalf. You may feel as if you are suffering in solitude but there is One who never leaves you. Remember His book and His bottle of tears!
