Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), Galatians 3:13
Most every culture throughout history has had stories of curses. Indeed, it would be the rare exception if someone had never heard any such story at some point in their life. It could be a story from long ago, maybe even from some far away land and perhaps from a place that, if it ever existed, does not exist today. Or, it could be a story of a more localized curse, perhaps relating so someone who has died. Then, there are the family stories; tales of curses relating in some way or another to one’s family history.
Regardless of the particulars, most of these “curse stories” are directly tied to what someone did or did not do or to a particular event in history. And, because of the very nature of a curse, they generally involve the spiritual realm — that which cannot be seen and therefore cannot be dealt with through natural means.
You may have been raised with stories about curses involving yourself or your family or someone you know. You could even have the impression that you are somehow under a curse and have just accepted it as a fact of life. It is easy and even natural to attribute bad things that happen in life to a curse, having heard about curses yet not really knowing what one really looks like!
Sixty-six times the word cursed is used in the Bible. We first see curses shortly after creation when the serpent was cursed and man and even the earth. All of these curses were brought on by the same thing: sin. Continuing on, you see Cain cursed for killing his brother, Abel and so, the curse of sin continues throughout the ages, even to today.
If you are the redeemed of the Lord and you have had your sins washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ, you are not, nor can you be cursed by anyone or anything. No curse that was on any family member or anyone in your past has any place in your life. Jesus specifically redeemed you from the curse; the curse of the Law. The Law is perfect and is therefore impossible for imperfect people to obey down to the letter. Therefore, if you were to stand before the Judge of all the earth based on the Law, you would be found guilty and sentenced to death. The curse of sin would be upon you as it is upon everyone who has ever lived.
God calls those who are His blessed, and what He has blessed cannot be cursed. The battle you have with curses is not with skeletons in your family tree closet or with threatening words from those who would seek to do you harm. It is the same battle that everyone faces and that no one, in and of themselves, can ever win — it is the battle against sin.
Jesus fought that battle and won. He was temped in all ways and suffered in every way that is common to man, yet He never sinned. Rather than be under the curse of sin, He conquered it! There may be plenty of things in your past or in your family history that are grounds for being under a curse, and the enemy will be quick to pronounce those curses over you, but those curses are empty words to one redeemed from the curse!
