The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace. Psalms 29:11
There are plenty of unknowns in life. If you were to categorize it, the unknowns would fill a very long column and the knowns column would have only one entry — The Lord. Oh, there may be plenty of things you know or, at least you think you know. You may know all about the laws of nature, but unless you consider nature’s Creator and His Law, then you could find yourself not knowing as much as you once thought you knew.
There are limits to the ability of our body and soul since they are mortal and passing away. The two things mentioned specifically in our verse today are sometimes beyond our grasp because of those mortal limitations. You can run out of strength and have nothing left to give. Your body is, after all, subject to the frailties of this world. You can face situations that are so unsettling that your soul cannot find rest. You probably know this is true because of past experiences in your own life or at least by observing the experience of others.
Have you ever gotten to the place where you were so tired you didn’t feel as if you could take another step? One thing after another just seemed to pile more and more weight on your shoulders until you couldn’t even stand under the load. Has your soul ever been taxed to the point where you had no peace? Even things that you could do nothing about kept you awake and worried and almost in despair. You face times like this because of what you know; what you know about the natural laws, what you know about yourself — that which is humanly possible. That which can and cannot be done.
But, with God all things are possible! When Jesus reached the place where Lazarus was buried, his sisters along with everyone else knew there was nothing that could be done for Lazarus, for he had been in the tomb four days. That was, of course based on what they knew of the laws of nature. They were about to experience first hand what God can do.
When the situation gets beyond the realm of possible, that’s when Jesus shows up! Why didn’t He come to Lazarus’ aid earlier? When Jesus first got word of Lazarus’ condition, he was only sick, but rather than starting off immediately, He waited two days. By that time, as He informed the disciples, Lazarus had already died. Why didn’t Jesus rescue His disciples earlier that night when they found themselves in a storm so severe that they would have been drowned?
It is at times like these, the most trying times of life, when you realize how great the Lord’s gifts are to you every day. God gives you and blesses you with things that are literally not humanly possible. As you wait on the Lord, He renews your strength and suddenly you are able to soar with the eagles.
Instead of being weighted down with all the cares of the world, you find the peace of God that passes all understanding. These are things that you know can’t be so, except that you know the Lord who will give you strength and who will bless you with peace!
