The Lord is Your Keeper

Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. Psalms 121:4-5

A keeper is one who guards and protects, who provides a wall or hedge of protection and who is always aware of the situation surrounding those entrusted to their keeping. It is both comforting and encouraging to know you have Someone watching over you. Even when you are not aware of His presence, the Lord is your keeper.

The Bible is full of beautiful word pictures; illustrations, comparisons and examples that paint a picture of a Biblical truth in natural terms that are easy to understand when presented in that way. Two such pictures of our relationship with the Lord show our need for a keeper and how the Lord is always on the job!

First, you have the example of little children. There is no question that little children must have a keeper; someone who is constantly watching over them and sometimes hedging them in to keep them safe from harm. There are endless threats to a child’s well-being and it seems if one is within reach (or even outside of their reach but obtainable by crawling or climbing) that they will soon find themselves right in the middle of a mess! Furthermore, it would seem reasonable to assume that once a child has gotten themselves into one of the aforementioned messes, that they would choose not to ever get into the same situation again. But, alas, that is rarely the case; little children have a knack for doing the same thing over and over and over again! Praise the Lord that He is your keeper.

The second example that illustrates this spiritual truth is that of sheep. If ever there was an animal in God’s created world that needs keeping, it is sheep. Sheep can get themselves into messes that they could never get themselves out of. Without a keeper of the sheep or a shepherd, sheep would have virtually no chance of survival given all of the threats they face. Even at that, if the shepherd falls asleep or loses track of one of his sheep, a lion or a bear might just be having lamb chops for dinner! Praise the Lord that He is your keeper.

Living in a world that is so full of evil, you face threats to your well-being every day. Spirit, soul and body, the enemy is out to destroy everything and everyone he can get his hands on. What a blessing to know that you have a heavenly Keeper who is constantly aware of everything that is going on around you — even (especially) things that are unknown to you.

There is that tendency for a little child to say, “I can do it myself” or “I don’t need any help” and the sheep is prone to go wandering off oblivious to all of the dangers it faces. The perspective in both instances is very limited and usually doesn’t end well, for they both need a keeper.

Humble yourself before the Lord and acknowledge your need for His help, His safe-keeping, and He will keep that which is entrusted to Him. The Lord is faithful and He has loved you with an everlasting love. He knows what you need even before you do and sometimes you don’t even know what to ask for. Just acknowledge that the Lord is your keeper!
