Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah Psalms 62:8
Out of the more than eight hundred times the word heart is found in the Bible, there are only a few times when the word is used to signify the organ of the body that pumps blood! It is usually in reference to one’s feelings and will, even one’s intellect. In other words, the center of one’s being. With that being the case, what is in the heart that can and should be poured out before the Lord?
Before getting to the answer to that question, remember, God sees your heart even though it is unseen to others and many times, even to yourself. You can be deceived by your own heart and it is impossible to fully know yourself as completely as the Lord knows you. Thus, we are called to walk by faith and not by feelings. As long as your faith is built on the solid rock of God’s Word, your steps will be sure.
Back to the question of what is in the heart; the heart can be filled with many different feelings and emotions. When you experience the goodness of the Lord and His faithfulness, your heart is filled with thanksgiving toward God. When you pour your heart out before the Lord, praise and thanksgiving will flow out. And that is exactly what the Lord wants you to do; pour out that praise before Him.
But, what if you are going through a hard time and wondering if the Lord is even with you in the midst of your struggle? What might your heart be filled with during those times? Possibly disappointment or even anger. Just as you are not meant to keep that praise bottled up in your heart, neither should these feelings be left there. Pour out your hurt as well as your happiness before the Lord. Pouring out your hurt before the Lord prepares your heart for healing!
The same holds true for fear and doubt. If you find yourself facing these two foes, you know they are not from the Lord and yet, because the heart is indeed the very center of your being, it can take hold of you in such a complete way it seems as if you can’t get past it. That’s when you know it is time to get before the Lord and pour your heart out before Him. Pour out all of that fear and doubt in His presence and allow His Word and His Spirit to fill you with faith and confidence in the Lord and His ability to bring you through any situation. Don’t let fear and doubt stand in the way of victory; pour it out before the Lord!
There could also be some other slime that tries to creep in every now and then and defile your heart (and with it, your whole being as well as those who get close enough to get some of it on themselves as well!). That would be unforgiveness and bitterness. There’s only one thing to do with those two — pour them out before the Lord and let His unconditional love for you wash over your heart and make it clean and new once more!
Whatever is in your heart needs to come out. If it is good, God wants to hear it. Praise from the upright is beautiful. And if it is not good, He wants to heal it. So, pour out your heart!
