Build on the Rock

“Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25

Life is like a house. That is the word picture we have in our verses today, but it is found in other passages of Scripture as well. There are some things to be gleaned from our word today other than how to build a beautiful house. In fact, the lesson Jesus is teaching here has more to do with that part of the house that cannot be seen rather than that which is usually thought of as being the house itself; the parts of the house that are readily visible and recognizable as the house.

When making life choices, it is easy to look at things based on what is visible and evident on the surface — how does this choice look, how will it be perceived by others, what will others think about it? This perspective does nothing to address the most important building question; what foundation am I building on? If I make this choice, will it be built on the shifting sands of change in this world, or will it be built on the solid, unchanging Word of God.

Things change and people change. It is therefore possible to make a life choice based on how things looked at the time and then look back later and wonder, “What was I thinking?” If, however the choice was made based on the will of God, then you have a solid foundation on which to build. Either choice may look great on the surface; people could look at your life and applaud your choices, seeing what a beautiful house your life is becoming. But, time and storms will tell!

Somewhere along the way, a storm suddenly blows in, seemingly from out of nowhere. The rain and wind are beating against your house. In those stormy times you discover (or at least are reminded of) the reasons why a rock foundation is not only recommended – it is essential. The reason becomes clearer with each passing day and month and year of life; there are going to be storms along the path of life, and a house, no matter how beautiful on the surface, will only stand the test of time if the foundation is solid.

The good news is found in our verses; God has already provided all of the building materials you need for a rock-solid foundation on which to build every aspect of your life, every room of your house, if you will. It is important to note the distinction between just hearing what God says and choosing to do what God says. When you hear the principles of God’s Word, you know they are just what you need. Anyone who would follow that pattern of living would be blessed for sure.

The key is to take that next step; you hear the Word of God and you believe that it works and anyone who follows that path will be blessed, then the next step is to choose to obey the Word of God. It really comes down to that. By obeying God’s Word, you are going to be blessed. Every day you are building your house, be sure to only build on the Rock!
