The Holy People

And they shall call them The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD; And you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken. Isaiah 62:12

Everyone who is born-again is a part of this people group — you are The Holy People! That might sound a bit optimistic, knowing yourself as well as you do. After all, you are not perfect, right? No. There are none who are perfect; only Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life on this earth, as for everyone else, all have sinned.

You are holy, not because you are perfect, but because the Lord has made you His dwelling place. You are a sacred place, consecrated and dedicated to the presence of the Lord. You are the temple of God, so you are a holy place. You are a part of the people of God. Wherever the Lord is, that place is holy; not because of the place but because of His presence.

In the third chapter of Exodus, Moses is tending the sheep of his father-in-law, Jethro. He led the flock to the back side of the wilderness. If ever there was a forsaken place, you would think it would be there. The wilderness is bad enough, but the back side of the wilderness would seem to be far away from God’s presence or His blessing.

But, alas, as Moses climbs Mount Horeb, he encounters the Lord in a bush that is on fire but not consumed by the fire. As the Lord begins to speak to Moses, He commands him to remove his sandals. Why? Because the place is holy ground. How could this be holy ground way back on the back side of the wilderness? It’s just a place to take the sheep to graze, isn’t it? Yes, in the natural and to all appearances, that is all it is. But what makes that ground holy is the same thing that makes you a part of The Holy People — the presence of God.

You are holy in the Lord because you are redeemed of the Lord. Once you give your life to God, even though you do not automatically become perfect, you are nevertheless the redeemed of the Lord. Through Jesus Christ, you become a partaker of God’s promises and a member of His family by adoption.

The Lord sought you out, you were not forsaken by the One who died for you so that you could live. He sought you out and bought you with His own blood; the price for your freedom from the bondage of sin and death. This is the story of redemption, this is your story; the redeemed of the Lord. You have been set apart for God’s purpose, consecrated and dedicated to it.

And how can you, being less than perfect, be counted among such a group as The Holy People? The same way anyone else can — because, even though you have let the Lord down, He never gave up on you, He never forsook you. He sought you out, found you in your sin and called you out. He brought you from death to life, from darkness to light, from hopelessness to an eternal hope, from sorrow to joy. He made everything new and even called you by a new name. You are now known as The Redeemed of the Lord. That’s how you became a part of The Holy People!
