“Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? Exodus 15:11
Moses and the children of Israel are singing a song of praise to the Lord and this question is a part of the lyrics. It is not, however a question seeking an answer, but rather a rhetorical question used only to state an indisputable fact — there is no false god that is in any way to be compared with the Lord.
And what is the occasion for this song of praise? God had just supernaturally delivered His people from the hand of Pharaoh, bringing them through the midst of the Red Sea with the water backed up until they crossed safely, then drowning the army of Egypt as they followed in pursuit. It was indeed a supernatural deliverance like no other. With such an obvious display of God’s majestic power, how could anyone even question whether there be another like the one true God?
The world then, as it still is today, was filled with the worship of false gods. In fact, when Moses and Aaron first approached Pharaoh with the command from God to let His people go, Aaron threw down the rod that he carried and it became a serpent as an illustration of the power of God. That didn’t bother Pharaoh, as he just called for his magicians to come and do the same thing. Pharaoh should have realized from the beginning that his magic tricks were no match for the Lord when Aaron’s rod-turned-serpent devoured all of the other serpents! But, because of the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart, he would persist.
The magicians of Pharaoh tried to keep up with the Lord as the plagues were inflicted upon Egypt and were able to turn some water red and add some frogs to the mix as well, but that’s when their bag of tricks was all used up. The devil can pretend like he has anything the Lord has, and that he can match the Lord step for step, but that of course is just another one of his lies. With a little sleight of hand and cunning craftiness, the enemy pretends to be like God, but in truth there is no one like our God!
When the third plague was released on Egypt, gnats, the magicians finally had to declare defeat, exclaiming to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Everything the Lord does is on purpose and for a purpose. He showed His awesome power through a tiny insect. Gnats are so small, they are used to indicate that something or someone is relatively small and insignificant. Jesus even used the contrast between a gnat and a camel in referring to the religious leaders’ practice of majoring on minor things.
Anytime the enemy tries to trick you into thinking that he is anything like the Lord, just remember the gnats. God created everything including you, and He upholds all things by the word of His power. There is nothing that is too difficult for the Lord. And what about the prince of the power of the air; what about his power? He can’t even produce a gnat on demand much less create one. Truly there is no one like our God. His glory is on display every day and night throughout the heavens and the earth in all that He has created and His power is revealed through His awesome wonders. There is no god like our God!
