Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Psalms 24:7-8
When you think of the Lord, it is common to think of Him on His throne in heaven, far away and maybe even distant; disconnected from this world and all that goes on down here. More to the point, it is easy to imagine that the Lord is involved in things that are far bigger than anything you could be facing. But in fact, the Lord is always looking for an open door!
Jesus is the image of the invisible God as the first chapter of Colossians tells us, so we can know a lot about our heavenly Father by looking into Jesus’ earthly ministry. Time and again, Jesus would surprise even His closest followers by taking time to minister to people who did not even seem to have any interest in following Him and some that could have easily been considered lost causes.
Then, you have the ones who, by the world’s valuation, would not have warranted the Master’s time; the lepers, the lame, even little children. You would think the most important people for Jesus to spend time with would be the ones considered to be important in the eyes of man, but that was never the case. Jesus died for all mankind and He is no respecter of persons. So, you would more than likely find Him among the outcasts and the forgotten ones rather than in the finest homes and palaces.
The Lord is near to those who have a broken and a contrite spirit. That does not mean you cannot believe that He will grace you with His presence because you are so unworthy. In fact, just the opposite is true; the more you humble yourself before Him, the closer you will find Him to be in your life. God resists the proud but He gives grace to the humble!
An important revelation we see in our verses today (as well as many places throughout the Word of God) is that your King is not just sitting on His throne — He is always ready to fight for you. He is the Lord, strong and mighty in battle. He knows you need more than just a ruler sitting on a throne, for in this life there are constant battles to be fought every day. You need a Champion — One who will fight on your behalf. That Champion is Jesus!
Don’t be deceived into thinking the Lord is too busy to pay you a visit or that He would not condescend to help you because you are not perfect. Jesus paid a high price for you to be adopted into His family, the family of God. Sometimes adoptions can be expensive and time-consuming, but nothing compares to your adoption into God’s family. Jesus is the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world — your adoption has been in the works for quite some time. And the price? The perfect lamb had to die to pay for your adoption.
Open the gates, the King of Glory wants to come in and spend time with you today, right now. And, He wants to hear about your battles (even though He already knows everything about you) and He wants to fight for you. It does not matter how strong your enemy is, your God is stronger and He is mighty in battle. He is the King of Glory!
