Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men. He turned the sea into dry land; they went through the river on foot. There we will rejoice in Him. Psalms 66:5-6
Our God is an awesome God. His works declare His glory and awesomeness. There are over sixty references to fools in the Bible, many of them pointing out the attributes that mark their life; pride and egocentricity, feeling as if they live in a world in which they are at the center of it all. This is summed up in a couple of places in the Psalms: the fool says in his heart that there is no God.
That is foolish indeed, since anyone can see the works of God and know without a doubt that everything they see was created by a divine Creator and did not come into being by chance. God has established the heavens and the earth in such an orderly way that they can be studied and events can be predicted. The time of the rising and setting of the sun for any given day is not left to chance, it has been appointed by design. Everything in God’s creation is by design and they all declare His glory.
The first place to go if you need to be reminded of God’s awesomeness or if you need an object lesson to help bring someone else to the knowledge of the Lord, is to just look around and look up into the heavens. God’s awesomeness will leave you in awe once again. It’s easy to get distracted by the day-to-day hustle and bustle and even get caught up in the chaos of this world, thus taking your eyes (however briefly) off of God’s goodness. So, the Lord is reminding you to come and see all that He has created!
The next place to look for a reminder of God’s awesomeness is at all that He has done. Among the greatest examples is the one found in our verses today; when the Lord turned the sea into dry ground. The deliverance of God’s people from Egypt is a type of the greatest of all God’s demonstrations of His awesomeness — when Jesus came to the earth as a man and died for the sin of the world so that we could be delivered out of bondage, just like the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea on dry ground.
Whatever situation you are facing, you can find something God has already done to encourage you to trust Him. Come and see what the Lord has done and know that He will do it again for you just like He did then. The Lord never changes, He still does awesome things today on behalf of His children.
That brings us to the final place to look to find the awesomeness of God — your own life. You know that God has been faithful to bring you this far and has done great and awesome things in your life and in those you love. It doesn’t matter what anyone says, you know that you know that God is awesome. This is a testimony, not only for others when you are reaching out to them, but also a testimony to your own soul when you have times of doubt or discouragement. There is a place of rejoicing at the river, that place where you crossed over on dry ground, that place where you first met Jesus and gave your life to Him. Come and see what good things God has created and has done in creation and has done in you!
