But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Romans 8:25
At first glance, this verse would seem to be filled with an oxymoron or two. For instance, what would be the basis for hoping for something that you do not see? Where does that hope come from if you have nothing to base it on? That’s where faith comes in. The Christian walk is a walk of faith from beginning to end. There is nothing we can do to please God if it is not done in faith. When you hold on to hope just because God gives you that hope through His Word, that faith pleases God (and gets results!).
Or, how about eagerly waiting for something — who looks forward to waiting? You can spend hours doing something you enjoy and it seems as if only minutes have passed. On the other hand, if you have to wait for something for five minutes, it can seem like an eternity! No wonder we have the added detail that maintaining the proper attitude while waiting requires perseverance. It’s not that we enjoy waiting but rather that we choose to cheerfully endure it.
The bottom line is this: much of what God has promised you in His Word is a matter of wait and see. It is a walk of faith. Hope, for a Christian is a solid foundation, one that allows you to wait with an eager expectation, to see things as they shall be even though they aren’t there yet. You will see what God said come to pass in your life and the life of your loved ones, but you don’t see it yet. Right now, all you have is God’s word on it. That’s the waiting part, the eagerly waiting part, the persevering part.
Sometimes the going can get rough. You know and are confident in what God says in His Word and yet, your eyes tell a different story. Beware of hoping only in what you see or holding onto a false hope that is not based on truth. It is natural to want to hold out hope for the things you desire or would like to see come to pass, but it is an exercise in futility and frustration to hope for something that God has not committed Himself to!
The good news is, as a child of the Most High God, you never have to rely on false hope or trust in what you can see. You can enjoy the blessing of walking by faith and experiencing God’s goodness and faithfulness in your life. That is one of the things that makes the Christian walk so exciting — you never know what a day is going to bring forth, but you know that your good Heavenly Father is at work in your life and in every situation.
It’s all part of the adventure; hoping for things that you cannot see and have no physical evidence to rely on. Getting up day after day and continuing to confess and believe that what God has promised, He will do. Even though you still see no visible signs of progress and others may even try to discourage you in your faith, you press on; you persevere.
Everything good comes from the Lord and everything good is worth the wait. Even if you see no way it will ever come to pass, you know that God is faithful and that He will keep His word, so you hold on to hope, you press on and you wait and soon you will see!
