The twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:10-11
Once, while Jesus was praying, one of His disciples asked that He would teach them how to pray and so, in the sixth chapter of Matthew and the eleventh chapter of Luke we have what is generally referred to as “The Lord’s Prayer”. It is, of course all totally awesome and so deep that books have been written about these few verses of Scripture. But, to go with our verses for today, let us consider the part about the Father’s will being done on earth just as it is in heaven.
When you begin to think about God’s will, it is likely your thoughts automatically go to your own life and how His will relates to or interacts with your life. In other words, we generally see everything in life (as well as things from heaven) from our own perspective; looking out from where we are at the time as though everything in this world, and maybe even the world to come, revolves around ourselves.
If you are going to pray, as Jesus taught, for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven, it would be helpful to know, or at least have a sense of, how things are in heaven — what does God’s will look like. That would be great, but how can you ever hope to get that kind of insight? Heaven is, after all out of this world, so to speak. As usual, the Lord comes through! He provides you with a glimpse into heaven in these verses. As the chapter begins, we see that a door is standing open.
What would you do if you walked past a door that had been closed your whole life and you always wanted to know what was behind that door but never had the chance to get even a peek until one day it is suddenly left standing wide open? You would probably look inside. Since we are to pray for the Father’s will to be done here as it is in heaven, let’s have a look.
This scene is rather foreign to anyone living in this world because it is not centered around what someone wants or needs or even desires; it is not centered around the will of man at all but rather around the will of God. The Lord is surrounded by people on thrones but they are all worshipping Him and casting their crowns down before Him and giving Him glory. The focus is on the Lord and who He is, and on His will.
How different your prayer life (and every other part of your life) will be when you model it after what you see beyond the open door of heaven. A life that does not seek center stage but rather bows down to Jesus as the center of all things. A life that does not seek to find God’s will as it relates to your life but instead seeks to define and determine the direction for your life based not on what you want God to do for you, but rather what He wants you to do for Him.
What a wonderful spiritual breakthrough to realize it’s not about you, it’s all about Him!
