If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? The LORD is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. Psalms 11:3-4
Everything in this world is shifting and changing. Even the seasons are a reminder to us of that fact. About the only thing you can be sure of in this life is that you can’t be sure of anything in this life! No matter how firm the foundation you choose to trust in among all of God’s created things, you will eventually find it can (and will) be shaken.
Many people build their lives on things you already know will not stand the test of time. Jeremiah sums up in the ninth chapter what we see throughout the Word of God; there are things we have in this life that have their place, but certainly are not a foundation on which to build our life.
The one who builds their life on wisdom and knowledge and education will one day see that the wisdom of man is foolishness to God. How haughty and ridiculous it is for those who build their entire existence on the wisdom of man to think their foundation will stand the test of time, and eternity!
And what about the mighty man, the one who has physical strength or social standing? Where will that get them in the day when their strength fails them and they stand before the omnipotent God? How about their social standing when all of the societies of this world have passed away and there is nothing left but a great White Throne and the God Who sits on that throne?
Then there is the rich person who trusts in their riches. There are so many Scriptures warning against this false hope, it could fill an entire book. What part of “money taking wings and flying away” or “all is vanity” is so complicated that people continue to follow this dead-end looking for security and a foundation on which to build their life?
The thirty-first chapter of Proverbs offers a couple of other false foundations; charm and beauty. Both of these can and should be attributes that are a part of your life, but they must exist not just on the outside but inwardly as well. And, they must never be the foundation of your existence.
How then, can you have a life that is sure and secure in such an uncertain and constantly changing world? Build on the only constant, which is not even of this world — the Lord. He is always in His Temple and His throne is in heaven, unaffected by any of the changes of this world.
Wisdom, strength, riches, charm, beauty; these and so many other things are a part of your physical life, but they do not and should not define who you are. The foundation for your life is immovable and unshakable. It does not depend on anything remaining constant in this life (for nothing ever does). Your foundation is in Heaven where the Lord reigns!
