The Secret Place

Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men! You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. Psalms 31:19-20

You may have played a few games of Hide and Seek growing up or at least seen the game played by others. Basically, the person who is, “it” will cover their eyes and count up to a pre-determined number while the other players find a place to hide.

If the players are very young, they will many times give away their position with an uncontrollable giggle at just the wrong moment or with an irresistible urge to peek out to see if “it” is nearby, only to be spotted. Then, there is the matter of a suitable hiding place. The first places that come to mind will also be the first places to be checked! To really play the game well calls for an exceptional hiding place (and enough self-control to stay still and quiet!), one that will not be easily discovered.

As you grow older, you may wish at times that there was a grown-up version of Hide and Seek, but not to play for fun. In the grown-up version there is still an, “it”, but it is not a friend, it is a foe. Also, in the grown-up version it is not a game, it is the life of a believer in a world full of evil. The devil is at work twenty-four hours a day trying to steal, kill and destroy anything he can get his demonic hands on and there are, sadly, many people who have chosen to be his servants rather than servants of the Most High God.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a hiding place that was so awesome the devil could not find you or get to you? Because of God’s goodness, there is such a place. It may seem like some situations come up in your life and the Lord is not prepared to help you, or at least you can’t see how He is going to come through. The fact is, He has already prepared something good for you even before the situation and the need arises — the Lord is never blind-sided although you may be on occasion. Something comes up seemingly out of nowhere and suddenly that is the reality you face at that moment. But, not to worry, for the Lord has already prepared a place for your deliverance.

The more you draw near to the presence of the Lord, the less accessible you become to the plots of evil people. It doesn’t mean that the evil goes away or even that you are taken out of the situation, but rather the Lord provides you a secret hiding place in the midst of it. Daniel was in a den of hungry lions in the natural but he was, at the same time, in the secret place of God’s presence where he was untouchable. Daniel’s three friends were physically thrown into a fiery furnace, but they were walking around in a place with a fourth Man, the Son of God! There was no fire or even the smell of smoke in that secret place where they were. The Lord will provide you with that same supernatural provision and protection.

Any time you face a situation where it seems like, “it” is about to find you and get you, just remember the den of hungry lions and the faithful servant of God who came through without being on the menu. Get into your secret place; the presence of the Lord!
