But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. Proverbs 4:18-19
From the beginning of time there has always been two roads, two paths, a choice. Adam was given a command by God not to eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and yet he chose the wrong road; the one that led to darkness and away from the presence of God.
The road that leads away from the Lord is not a one lane path but more like a way, a direction. Jesus puts it in slightly different terms; you are either for the Lord or against Him, you are either gathering for the Lord or you are scattering. So, the path that leads away from the Lord may go in many different directions and have many unique and distinct features about it that differentiate it from other paths, but they all have something in common — they lead away from the Lord and His will!
Some roads are obviously the way of the wicked. When the Magi were following the star that led them to Jerusalem and eventually to Bethlehem, they knew they were following the path of the just; a light from heaven was leading them on. Then, after they had presented their gifts to the young child Jesus, they had a choice. Herod had told them to bring back word as to the Messiah’s whereabouts ostensibly for the purpose of going to worship Him. But the Lord warned them in a dream that Herod’s path was the path of darkness and not light. Herod’s hidden (or at least so he thought) intention was to pretend to be on the path of light while following the way of darkness. His plan was not for worship but for destruction; the killing of the innocents.
No matter how sincere someone is or, as is usually the case, how deceptive and duplicitous they are, you can always tell the source by the destination. If it is a path that leads to darkness then it is the way of evil, no matter how appealing it looks on the surface, that doesn’t change the destination. Evil will always lead to darkness.
Just because you have the most beautiful and decorative coffee cup, it does not automatically follow that the cup will contain the world’s best cup of coffee. An impressive glass does not necessarily contain pure water. The cup doesn’t make the coffee nor the glass make the water. Do not choose a path just because the advertisements and allurements and appealing people insist that it is the path for you. Consider the destination and by that determine the source.
There will always be two roads, two ways to go. God’s way, which is like the sun shining in its strength. That road gets brighter and brighter every step you take. The other way is any way that is not God’s way. No matter how right it looks or people make it seem, if it’s not God’s way, it’s not the right way. Most people today are stumbling through life not even realizing what is causing them to stumble. They are following the path that is well traveled and indeed have many companions. But there are always two roads. Choose God’s way!
