But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Ephesians 4:7
Jesus Christ is a gift; the Father loves you so much that He gave you the gift of His Son. This gift of Jesus, the gift of salvation, is the manifestation of God’s grace. There is nothing you can do to earn this gift. You can’t be good enough to warrant receiving this gift. All you can do is receive by faith the wonderful gift of salvation God has provided for you by His grace.
How could you measure a gift like that? What price can be put on the salvation of your soul? What would be an even trade for your soul? What would you give in exchange for eternal salvation with a home in heaven where there are no tears and everything is perfect? Indeed, Jesus asked the question rhetorically, for there is obviously nothing that can compare with such a wonderful salvation. When you look at it like that, Jesus’ parable about finding a great treasure and selling everything you have just to obtain that treasure make perfect sense.
Indeed, if the only gift the Lord ever gave you was the gift of salvation, that is more than enough to keep you singing all of your days. After all, what would be the alternative? Where would you be without the Lord? And think about the hereafter; no one (whether they admit it or not) wants to spend eternity in the Lake of Fire, where there is eternal torment and eternal separation from their Creator.
So, if all you ever receive from the Lord is the gift of Jesus Christ, you are blessed beyond measure. But wait, there’s more! It’s like opening a gift only to find there are more gifts inside of the gift. When you receive Jesus as your Lord, He has some gifts to give you. In fact, you are daily loaded down with the benefits of being God’s child and a joint-heir with Jesus!
With all of this talk of gifts, it is possible to begin to feel unworthy and to be reluctant to even hope for all of this goodness from the Lord. Just remember that a gift truly given is not based on performance; there are rewards for that. The Lord indeed does have crowns and rewards for His children based on the deeds done in the body, so you have that to look forward to in eternity.
Jesus is not only a gift from the Father for eternity, He also brings with Him gifts for this life, to help you in your walk with Him each and every day. You have received the grace of God in salvation and you have also received the grace of God to live for the Lord, to live an abundant life. This grace, this favor from the Lord is not based on performance but on position. Because you are “in Christ” you are blessed with a measure of His gift.
There may be times when you do not see any way that God would lavish you with gifts, knowing your shortcomings. You might just be hoping for a “cabin in the corner of Glory land” but Jesus has already told you He is preparing a mansion for you. That’s how much He loves you. That’s an example of the measure of Christ’s gift to you!
