The Lord is My Helper

So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

Everyone needs help sometime. That is a truth that is at times not so evident to the one in need. Little children go through stages of learning something and then convincing themselves that they no longer need any help in the matter because, “I can do it myself”. They will (hopefully) realize that there may be more to it than they can understand at that moment.

This spectacle continues as the child grows, and time after time, they fall for the same deception — you are just fine all by yourself, you don’t need any help. Even as a young adult and into adulthood the pattern may continue. Add to that a society that is geared toward creating self-centered individuals and it becomes a very widespread mindset.

Let’s take a look at life and see if it can be done without any help. When a child comes into the world, are they capable of caring for themselves? Definitely not. What about when that child begins to grow and learn new things, will all of this new-found knowledge suddenly make them totally self-sufficient? Not hardly.

Well then, how about those adolescent years, when young people may begin to feel as if no one understands what they are going through and thus could not help them even if they wanted help, which they sometimes do not want. Are they good to go all on their own? Absolutely not. God never intended for it to be so, for children and adolescents are not equipped to go through life on their own.

But, what about mature adults, especially Christian adults? Surely you are capable of going through life without any outside help, right? Not any more than a little child! In fact, Jesus said we must come to Him as a little child if we want to enter the Kingdom of God. It is through our acknowledgement of need that we receive God’s help. He knows we have needs and He knows what we need before we even ask, but still He tells us we are to ask if we are going to receive.

We need God’s help every hour, every minute, every second. Without the Lord’s help, we do not even have life itself. He gives us our very breath and every beat of our heart. He is the provider of every good and perfect gift you have received in this life. He is the one who provides everything you need for life and godliness. He is also your protector, for the enemy wants to steal from you and destroy everything good in your life and even kill you.

Even in a world so fragile and full of evil, as a child of God Almighty, you can boldly say “The Lord is my helper”. There is no need to go through life in fear so you proclaim, “I will not fear. What can man do to me?” When you humble yourself before the Lord and ask for His help, He is always ready, willing and able to help. So, the next time you feel that childish urge to say, “I can do it all by myself”, remember how that usually ends up and change your confession to the Word of God: “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear!”
