The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16
There is a lot of darkness in the world, it seems like the world is literally filled with darkness. But, as usual, things are not entirely as they seem! After God created the heavens and the earth, He spoke light into the darkness. Everything that God created in those first six days when time began was good. Everything God did and everything He does is good. Every good thing comes from God; always has and always will.
So, the Lord filled the earth with light where there had been darkness in the beginning and since that time, even though the sun lights the day and the moon and stars light the night, only the presence of God provides light for the soul. Things were great on the earth as long as Adam obeyed the one command he had been given by his Creator. But, once he disobeyed that command, he and his wife were put out of the Garden of Eden and out of the presence of God. And something else — out of the light and into the darkness. Oh, the sun still came up in the morning and the moon and stars gave their light to the night, but their souls were in darkness.
The darkness became so severe and widespread over the next several generations that the Lord sent a flood over the entire earth and started over with Noah and his family. But, generation after generation saw more and more darkness of heart as people once again turned further and further away from their Creator.
Jesus came and brought life, the God-kind of life. And, with that heaven-sent life came something else: light. The life of God, the presence of God is the light of man. When Jesus began His earthly ministry, the world had been in darkness for a very long time. People sat in darkness, for they did not have the presence of God with them. All of that changed when Jesus came to the earth; now anyone who desires to come out of the darkness and into the light has a Way — Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life as He declares in the fourteenth chapter of John.
If you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all of the darkness around, just remember that darkness is just the absence of light; as soon as light is introduced into the darkness, it overcomes it. Light always triumphs over darkness! Darkness has no defense against the light. The only hope the enemy has of keeping you or your loved ones in darkness is through deception and lies. The truth always brings freedom and deliverance. A person may remain in darkness, thinking there is no way out, but Jesus is always there ready to be their Way.
He is also your Way; your way out of some situations and through others. Whichever way He chooses, the end result will be victory, because Jesus is always leading you in victory. Even if all you see ahead of you is darkness, do not fear, but go forth in faith, for as you take each step of faith, the Lord will overcome the darkness and the unknown with His light. Darkness is defeated as soon as His light has dawned! Let it shine.
