King of Kings

And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:16

Being the underdog is nothing new for God’s people, but rather a recurring theme! As you look back through history you find, time and time again that God’s people are outnumbered and usually by a huge factor. Many times, it seems as if the enemy wins.

All the way back at the beginning, in the Garden of Eden, even though Adam and Eve were not outnumbered by the enemy, still they fell for the serpent’s lies and they “gave away the farm” so to speak. It looks as if the enemy won the war before it had really even gotten started. Not hardly. Even before the curse of sin was pronounced on the woman and then on the man, the Lord told the serpent what he had coming. The day was coming when that serpent of old was going to be crushed by the Seed of woman.

But there will be countless battles between the devil and God’s people before that great showdown with Jesus. Remember Moses leading a rag-tag group of recently freed slaves out of Egypt while being pursued by Pharaoh’s army? The odds were definitely against them ever making it out of Egypt. Would Pharaoh win? Not hardly! With a pillar of fire and a cloud and the parting of some water, God’s people ended up with the victory.

David seemed to be no match for Goliath and he certainly couldn’t count on any help from his fellow Israelites since they were all in hiding! Is this going to be a victory for the giant and for the enemy? Not hardly! Once again, we see the Lord bringing about a supernatural victory. Quite often, Israel faced armies many times their own size and the Lord would go before them and secure the victory.

Of course, there were also times when God’s people were defeated and at times taken into captivity, but the reason was always the same — it was not that God had abandoned them but rather that they had forsaken the Lord and chose to go their own way. Even then, the Lord would hear their cry of repentance and deliver them.

The greatest example of an underdog would, on the face of it, appear to be Jesus’ life on this earth. Born in very humble surroundings to a relatively poor and very plain family from an extremely small, rural community, even before He is three years old, he has King Herod trying to kill Him. As He begins His ministry, He has the religious leaders trying to kill Him. Eventually, after a mock trial, He is crucified. Did the devil finally win? Not hardly!

No matter what trials you face in your life, you can be sure that God is with you and is aware of your circumstances. Things that you see and feel may suggest that this time the enemy is indeed winning, at least that’s the way it looks and feels from where you are standing (or maybe kneeling!). But, even if you are persecuted, you are never abandoned and you may be down but you are never out. Jesus Christ has all authority in heaven and on earth. There have been battles since time began and that is not going to end until the end. In the meantime, go forth in faith knowing that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings!
