I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalms 34:4
Fears come in all shapes and sizes. Fear can also come as a noun or a verb. You can experience fear as an emotion, many times without even knowing why you are afraid or what you have to be afraid of. Fear takes on the form or substance of a thing. Fear can also be a verb — a description of something that you are; you can be afraid, you can be fearful.
Some fears are rather universal, others are more particular. The fear of the unknown is very common as is the fear of failure or rejection. Some find heights or tight places to be fear-inducing. The list could go on and on.
Then, there are fears relating to relationships. It takes trust to love others without fear. Many relationships are filled with fear or at least influenced by it to one degree or another. This is even more evident when it comes to your relationship with the Lord. The first example we see of this is in the Garden of Eden. Eve believed the lies of the serpent and began to experience the fear of feeling unloved by her Creator. This led to her trying to do for herself what God had already committed to do for her and indeed was doing.
Next, we find her husband, Adam, hiding in fear from the presence of God. Once again it has to do with his relationship with the Lord. Rather than trusting in God’s perfect love and provision for him, he followed his wife in disobeying God and immediately was filled with fears he had never known before.
What fears do you battle with? Why, what is the root cause of those fears? One thing is for sure, they are not of God. Jesus was continually exhorting His disciples as well as others He ministered to, not to fear. You may have been taught to have some fears as you were growing up or you could have developed fears in your life through past experiences or bad choices in your life.
Once you put your past in the past, those fears need to go there also — into your past, for they are not a part of your present, of who you are now. Once you identify the source of fear in your life it is time to vanquish it; to get the victory. We find the path to overcoming fear in our verse.
When you recognize you have fears that need to be dealt with, it is not enough just to decide you are no longer going to have those fears, they need to be dealt a final blow. But you are going to need some help. Where does our help come from? It comes from the Lord!
Seek the Lord, and be specific as to what you are needing help with. The Psalmist says that when he sought the Lord, He heard him. In order for the Lord to hear, you must speak. Call out your fears to the Lord and ask for His help. It does not do you any good to pretend in the presence of the Lord, for He knows you through and through. Just be honest and real with the Lord. It is not spiritual weakness to need His help and acknowledge your need. That’s when your help comes and you are strengthened and delivered from fear!
