What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:31-32
It is encouraging to remember that Elijah was only human. Yes, he prayed that it would not rain and it did not rain for over three years. Then, he prayed that it would rain again and it rained! He had such a special relationship with the Lord, even King Ahab attributed the Lord’s actions to Elijah.
Finally, Elijah challenged the king himself to a showdown of sorts; Elijah and the one true God against all of Ahab’s false prophets, which at the time amounted to eight hundred and fifty of them. So, it was one against eight hundred and fifty. Great odds as always for one of God’s children because, if God is for you, who can be against you?
The result of this epic battle was that God answered Elijah’s prayer and sent fire down from heaven. All of Israel saw the awesome display of the power and glory of God. In the end, all of the false prophets are destroyed and all of God’s people are praising Him and declaring that He alone is God! A great day and a great victory in the life of Elijah.
Then, a surprising thing happened: Ahab’s wife threatens Elijah and he becomes afraid and runs for his life, sat down under a tree and asked the Lord to take him on home to heaven, suggesting that his life was basically over. He felt all alone in the world and even stated as much to the Lord.
What changed from one day to the next? Wasn’t God the same as when he answered Elijah by fire in front of all Israel as well as eight hundred and fifty false prophets? Wasn’t this the same God who had always been with him and shown Himself strong through Elijah time and time again? The only thing that changed was Elijah’s perspective. God had not changed so there was still no one who could stand against Him! Still, instead of standing in faith, Elijah ran in fear.
It could be that you too face times of great triumph in your journey with the Lord, perhaps not conquering eight hundred and fifty false prophets at one time or having the chance to minister to all of God’s people in a single day, but still victories none the less. During those times you may feel spiritually invincible, even making proclamations similar to the boy David as he ran out to defeat the giant. How is it that you have such boldness? Because you know, during those times, that you are not alone — God is with you and He is for you!
But there may be other times when fear creeps in and, where you once withstood a multitude of the enemy’s forces, just one voice from the enemy’s camp sends you running. And then the Lord finds you all alone and says, “What are you doing out here hiding?” And, as you explain to the Lord how you feel alone in the world as if you have no one to stand with you and see no way of escape, you realize once again that you are never alone. You are never forsaken. You are victorious for, no matter who is against you, God is for you!
