That you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 1 Timothy 6:14-15
A sovereign or a potentate is one who possesses total, unconditional, absolute, unlimited and unrestricted power and authority over a realm. The realm referred to in our verses is all of creation; the heavens and the earth. Jesus Christ is the one and only Sovereign over this realm. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him by the Father.
There have been in the past and still are today monarchs who wield varying degrees of authority over their realm in this world, but their authority is limited in its scope and reach and duration. Their kingdom may have consisted of much of the population of the world at the time or just a handful of people in a community or village. Whatever the size of the realm, it was not an absolute, eternal reign — all kings and kingdoms eventually come to an end.
One of the shortest reigns (if one could even use the term in this case) was in France in the year eighteen hundred and thirty. King Luis XIX succeeded his father, King Charles X, who had abdicated. Twenty minutes after becoming the King of France, Luis also abdicated. So, he basically never reigned over France at all even though he was king for a day (well, part of a day!)
On the other end of the spectrum are names of rulers that are well known either for their brutality or the scope of the lands that they conquered and eventually ruled by force. A few names that stand out are Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great and Attila. Napoleon once ruled over seventy million people. Julius Caesar expanded the reaches of the once mighty Roman Empire (until Brutus ended his reign!) Cyrus the Great built an empire that spanned three continents.
So, where are these kingdoms and their sovereigns today? They have all passed away as they all do. No power or authority on this earth will remain forever. They all have a beginning and they will surely all come to an end.
As a child of God, you serve a Kingdom that will never pass away; it always was and always will be. Not only is the Kingdom of God eternal, it is also infinite. There is no place or time that is outside the realm of Jesus Christ’s authority. You may face the challenges of earthly power or authority being misused or abused, but you always have a higher authority to Whom you can appeal — the Lord Jesus Christ.
There has been and will continue to be those who will set themselves up or be set up by others in places of authority. The kingdoms of the world will continue to rise and fall, but through it all, the authority over all things seen and unseen continues to rest in the hands of the One who is ever interceding for you. The One who gave His life for you. The One who wants to give good gifts to you. Jesus Christ, the only Sovereign!
