Weapons and Words

No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD. Isaiah 54:17

If anyone told you before you became a Christian that, if you would just take that step of faith and make Jesus your Lord and Savior, then all would be smooth sailing from that moment on, they were either badly mistaken or worse, intentionally misleading you.

Everything we need to know about life, either with or without the Lord, can be found in His Word. Life, the way God intended when He created all things during those first six days at the beginning of time, was good. But it didn’t take Adam and Eve long to break God’s beautiful creation through disobedience. Since that time, what God created good has been plagued with evil. In fact, the earth groans, waiting to be redeemed from the curse of sin.

We live in a sin-plagued world and that does not change when we become a Christian. We change from the inside out, but the world around us is still under the sway of the wicked one. It may seem at times as if the attacks intensify once you become a Christian and that is usually the case, since you are now “playing for the other team” — Team Jesus! Even people who used to be your “friends” may turn against you and the world in which you once seemed so much at home is no longer your home at all.

The weapons that will be tried against you, as our verse points out, are custom-made just to attack you at a particular point in time. These weapons are formed, they are not mass produced but rather created for a particular purpose. When Jesus had been in the wilderness for forty days, He was hungry. As usual, the devil attacks any vulnerability he can find, so he tries to get Jesus to turn a stone into bread.

Words can also be used as weapons to tear down and condemn; even to destroy. So, is this your heritage the verse talks about? Is this the portion you, as a child of God have inherited from Him? No, all of this evil that is in the world is not from God. God cannot be tempted by evil nor does He tempt with evil. Only good things come from the Lord, every good gift and every perfect gift comes from Him.

So, what is your heritage as God’s child? There will be weapons formed especially by the enemy to destroy you, but none of them will succeed. You always have the victory in Jesus Christ! But, what about words spoken in judgment against me for my past sins? These words will be brought down and trampled underfoot. Not because you are without sin but because you have received righteousness from the Lord. Jesus Christ has become righteousness for you.

Don’t be surprised at the attacks of the enemy or the words spoken against you, just be confident in who you are as a child of God and confident in Jesus’ place in your life. Just because you come under attack it doesn’t mean you are not where the Lord wants you, the Lord will show Himself strong on your behalf against every weapon and word!
