Peace with God

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2

There are plenty of people in the world today who are not at peace with others. There are entire groups of people who are not at peace with other groups of people, sometimes for no other reason than the fact that they are a part of the other group. Individual reasons for not being at peace with others will vary greatly. Sometimes the basis can be a past offense of some kind, other times a perceived offence that doesn’t really exist. Then, there are plenty of cases where people are not at peace with others for no reason at all!

The bottom line is; there will never be world peace as long as it is up to mankind to do the peace-making! But, what about peace with the Lord? After all, five times in the New Testament the Lord is referred to as the God of Peace. On top of that, Isaiah prophesies that Jesus will be called, among other illustrious names, the Prince of Peace. This was confirmed on the night of Jesus’ earthly birth when the angels proclaimed peace on earth, goodwill toward man.

So, why would everyone not have peace with God if He is peace itself? That is God’s will and it was His plan from the beginning. He created man to have fellowship with Him — to be at peace with Him. But we find something very telling when the Lord came looking for Adam after he had eaten of the forbidden fruit. Adam is hiding from God when He comes calling for, as he will later explain to his Creator, he was afraid when he heard the Lord’s voice calling him. Now, instead of a life of peace, Adam knows fear.

The answer to the above question is, sin is what prevents someone from having peace with God. With that being the case, who has a chance since all have sinned? The answer is in our verses; through faith in Jesus Christ, you are justified as far as the Lord is concerned. In other words, He renders and regards you as just and innocent, as righteous. It is not that the Lord is naïve concerning your past less-than-perfect moments, it is the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ on your behalf that justifies you. When the Father looks at you, He sees the perfect blood of Jesus that has cleansed you and made you whiter than snow!

Now, because you are at peace with God, you can actually enter into His presence. God’s Throne of Grace is available to you any time day or night. You have an all-access pass because of Jesus. These passes are not for sale although they came at a very high price, they have all been pre-purchased by Jesus Himself and that’s the only place to get one. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. He has the only tickets to heaven!

Finally, you not only have help for the present, you also have hope for the future. By faith, you can face every day and by that same faith you can face all of your tomorrows. The Father desires fellowship with you every day, it’s the way He created things to be. There is nothing this world has to offer that is worth giving up that relationship, that fellowship, that peace, that hope. Nothing can take the place of peace with God!
