Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? Psalms 56:3-4
Fear is not of God. It is clear from God’s Word that He has not given His children a spirit of fear. That does not mean, however, that as a Christian you have never had (nor will ever have) to battle with moments of being afraid. When that moment comes, you have a choice; you can put your trust in God and overcome or you can succumb to fear.
In reading these verses, it would be easy to assume they are written by a spiritual wimp, someone who just didn’t know how to walk by faith. After all, if he was walking by faith, he would never have times of being afraid. Right? Before we get right into the answer to that question, let’s look at the life of a young man who lived long ago.
There once lived a teenaged boy who took care of his father’s sheep; he was a shepherd in the literal sense of the word. Sheep have a tendency to get themselves into a lot more trouble than they are capable of getting out of and these sheep were no exception. Sometimes, when one of the sheep had wandered off from the flock, a lion or a bear would come along and grab that sheep in its teeth and take it off intending to have lamb chops for dinner!
You would think that this young man would just consider that sheep as a lost cause and concentrate on the ones that were still left, but instead, this shepherd goes after that lost sheep and rescues it from the very mouth of the beast. But, what do you think happens when you take supper away from an angry, hungry lion or bear? You become the new item on the menu. When the wild animal turned on the young shepherd, he grabbed it by its hair and killed it!
That same young shepherd boy would recount these facts before the king himself and then go out to face a formidable giant. When it came time for some giant slaying, he did not hesitate but ran to the battle. No one who has even a cursory knowledge of the exploits of King David would ever think, much less suggest audibly, that he was any kind of wimp!
Therefore, even if you have moments of being afraid, you are in the company of the greatest warrior that ever took up the name of the Lord God Almighty — David, the shepherd–king. The key is in the follow-through. Trust in God and confess your faith.
“Father, I have put my trust in You and I will not allow fear to settle into my soul. I will walk by faith and not by what I see or even what I feel. I may feel momentarily afraid at times, Father, but I will not walk in fear, I will walk in faith. You alone are God and there is no one or nothing that can stand against you. What can anything that is of this world do to me? I thank You for making me a giant–slayer, In Jesus’ name, amen.”
Put your trust in the Lord before you face the lion or the bear, or the giant. Declare your faith in the Lord and acknowledge your need. “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You!”
