Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17
It is a blessing and a comfort to know there is someone who is praying for you. Sometimes when things are not going so well, it can make all the difference. As a Christian, you have the opportunity to not only be blessed by others’ prayers for you but to also be a blessing to others in the same way. When you pray for someone you are standing in the gap for them, you are talking to the Lord on their behalf.
In the Bible, a priest is one who talks to the Lord on behalf of the people. Although the title is bestowed much more loosely in our day, we will consider its use based on the Biblical definition. All throughout the Bible, we see sacrifices being made by priests and high priests as they go about fulfilling the Law of Moses to one degree or another. But being mere mortals themselves, the sacrifices they made on behalf of the people was never enough to deal with their sin once and for all — the rituals continued year after year.
The best that anyone can do is less than perfect. No matter how sincerely and diligently the priestly duties are performed, they will always fall short of the glory of God. When the Lord saw that there was no one who could pay the perfect price for the sin of the world, His own arm brought salvation to the earth; He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus.
When you think of what Jesus did for you, probably first and foremost the cross would come to mind. Jesus died for your sins and that is the greatest gift anyone has given or could ever give you, for indeed salvation is a gift from God to you. You may also recall the times the Lord has helped you, perhaps with a physical provision that came so unexpectedly it had to be heaven-sent. Or, it could be the healing power of the name of Jesus that you think of when you are looking back at all the Lord has done for you.
One thing that can be easily overlooked is Jesus’ role in your life as your great High Priest. He is always standing between you and the heavenly Father. No one gets to the Father unless it is through Jesus Christ. Why? Because God is perfect and no one can measure up! But, how does it help to have Jesus as your High Priest when He also is perfect? Because Jesus has been there (or more specifically, right where you are).
Jesus is merciful because He has been through everything that you are going through, yet He never sinned. He will always be there for you because He is faithful, He never changes. Jesus can relate to your needs and He feels your pain, for He lived on the earth as a man even though He didn’t have to.
The reason you can come boldly before God’s throne is because Jesus is the One who represents you before the Father. You have an advocate, someone who is always standing in the gap for you. Your High Priest is Jesus and He is always merciful and faithful!
