Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 2 Peter 3:3-4
A scoffer is one who is scornful and mocking, laughing at and making fun of Christians and those who are sincere in their commitment to the Lord and His Word. A scoffer will show contempt and disrespect for Christians and their values in an open and expressive way. In other words, when you run across a scoffer, you will know it!
It is no wonder that the world we live in today is full of scoffers. After all, children grow up hearing all kinds of voices telling them, or at least implying, that there is no God. Many are even taught things that are not true as though it were the absolute truth, being deceived and, in turn, deceiving others. Countless millions of dollars have been spent over the past several decades trying to “prove” there is no God, no Creator.
It is important to remember that scoffers do not need proof. They will in fact always steer clear of truth (which is in and of itself proof) so that they can willfully and purposefully pursue the lie and lead as many as they can into their error. They will belittle your beliefs based on what they see and feel, not on what God says. Another thing to be aware of is the tactic that has been used by scoffers since the days in the garden when the original scoffer, the devil, tempted Eve with his mocking words.
It makes no difference whether or not you see things happening when you pray, that is where faith comes in. The prayer of faith requires a walk of faith. Scoffers can be like the waves that Peter suddenly noticed when he was in the process of walking to Jesus on the water. Peter realized, after he was already out of the boat and on the way to where Jesus was, that he could not walk on water. How did he realize that all of a sudden? The waves told him so!
It does not matter how many voices are mocking and taunting you, telling you that there is no hope, you will not make it, you can’t do it. No matter how many voices are telling you these things, they are not true just because someone says so. Truth comes only from the Lord and anyone, any voice, that contradicts the truth is not telling the truth. Even if everyone you know is like the waves surrounding Peter, telling you that you cannot walk on water, if Jesus says you can, then you can. You can, in fact, do all things through Christ!
Do not live your life (or even any part of your life) based on the tactics and pressure of scoffers. Just because there are people taunting you and it seems as if every wave of the sea is against you, that is not a reason to get back in the boat — keep on walking on the water. Keep pursuing the will of God for every area of your life.
But what if people scoff at me and mock me and ridicule me because of my faith and the choices I make for myself and my family? Do I just give in and give up? Never! Don’t seek the status quo, seek the will of God. You will be victorious. And surely, scoffers will come!
