Heirs According to the Promise

And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29

About two thousand years before the Christ child was born in Bethlehem, God called a man named Abram to leave the land of his fathers and follow Him as the one true God. That journey took him through the land of Canaan and into Egypt then back into the land of Canaan, which would eventually become the land of Israel.

God had a plan which He revealed to Abram, who would later be renamed Abraham by the Lord Himself. This plan involved giving the land of Canaan to Abraham and his descendants for all time. Furthermore, the Lord pronounced a blessing over Abraham and his descendants as well as a blessing over all those who blessed him or his family. There was only one problem with God’s plan — Abram’s wife was not able to bear children.

Actually, in the natural, there were plenty of “problems” with God’s plan. When Abram and Sarai got their new names, he was ninety-nine years old and his wife was ninety. In other words, they were too old to have an heir and thus too old to receive the promise of God. Or were they? It’s not too late until the Lord says it’s too late, so it wasn’t too late for Abraham and Sarah.

But then, when their son, Isaac was a young man, probably late teens or so, the Lord told Abraham to sacrifice him as a burnt offering. Once the Lord saw Abraham’s faith and obedience, He did not require Isaac’s life but provided for Himself a lamb for the sacrifice in Isaac’s place. Sacrificing his only heir would seem to make the fulfillment of God’s plan an impossibility, but with the Lord nothing is impossible and He always makes a way even when there is no way.

As a follower of Christ, you have received many great and precious promises and God has a wonderful plan for your life. But like Abraham was once Abram, you also had a life before your Christian life. It might seem sometimes as if it is too late for the Lord to do good things for you or for those you love. You may look at God’s Word and then take a look, in the natural, at your life and see many “problems” with the plan God has laid out for you.

When you became a Christian, you were not only adopted into the family of God, you were adopted into Abraham’s family as well. That means that you are blessed and called to be a blessing. It doesn’t matter who or what you were before, you are now an heir to the promise God made to Abraham to bless his descendants.

Virtually everything God promised Abraham seemed too good to be true because it was humanly impossible. But God calls those things that aren’t as though they were and then they are. There is nothing too difficult for the Lord. When the Lord does it in such a supernatural way as He did for Abraham and Sarah, He gets the glory. And so it is in your life; the things that God does for you even though they are impossible are for His glory. That’s who you are in Christ, you are an heir according to the promise!
