The Mind of Christ

For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16

Have you ever wondered, “What was the Lord thinking?” Some things just do not make sense to the natural mind. In fact, you may even have moments when you would like to give the Lord some advice, maybe instruct Him on how things work in “the real world”. Alright, perhaps not, but it would be nice if there were at least a heavenly suggestion box!

Paul is quoting, or at least alluding to the fortieth chapter of Isaiah as our verse begins when he asks a rhetorical question. Obviously, no mere mortal can even begin to know all that God our creator knows, to say nothing of being such a master of said knowledge to be in a position to instruct the Lord. That is such an apparent fact that the question itself provides the answer — no one has known the mind of the Lord and no one has the knowledge to instruct the Lord on anything. Period.

Then we come to the second part of the verse and see what is possible for those who are a part of God’s family, those who have been made new through the Lord Jesus Christ and have God’s Spirit within them. It is not a matter of understanding all of God’s ways, for even the grandest aspects of His creation are the mere edges of His ways. His ways are not our ways nor are His thoughts our thoughts.

So then, how can you have the mind of Christ if you are not able to understand the depths of the ways of God? The Lord has chosen to make known His truth and His purpose and plan for mankind. It is a mystery that has been hidden for ages but is revealed through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit in you. People of every generation have tried to come up with explanations for the three big questions: “Where did I come from?”, “Why am I here?” and “Where am I going?”. Those questions remain unanswered for most people, for the answers are only found in the One who created this world and everything in it.

There will always be things in life you do not understand and things that seem to not be going as well as they could. Things that, if you were in charge you might choose to do differently at the time. But through it all, you have the mind of Christ to keep you pressing on. You know that God has a plan and purpose for your life and that He does all things on purpose and for a purpose.

Also, you can find strength and encouragement in the knowledge of God’s plan for eternity and the sure hope you have as an anchor for the soul. You know the thoughts the Lord has toward you are for good and not for evil. You know the Lord cannot be tempted by evil and He temps no one with evil. You know that every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from your loving heavenly Father.

All these things along with many other promises from the Word of God you know. Even though you don’t have all of the answers, you know it’s all going to be alright. You know because you see what cannot be seen. You have the mind of Christ!
