Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel. Joshua 14:14
“That’s what you get.” A phrase that is often directed toward children when they have chosen to learn a lesson the hard way rather than receive the instruction of wisdom being given to them. For instance, if a child is told not to touch a hot iron because it is hot and they will be burned if they touch it, that child is going to get one of two things. The child will either get some wisdom that will serve him well for the rest of his life, or, if he chooses instead to disobey what he has been told and disregard the words of wisdom being passed onto him then, he will get burned. If he chooses the latter, chances are he will hear the aforementioned phrase!
The same thing can be said of most all areas of life when you consider the law of sowing and reaping. If you want something to change in your life and yet everything stays the same, then everything stays the same. To put it another way; if you keep doing what you have been doing, you will keep getting what you have been getting. You may want a crop of corn, but if all you plant are peas then you are not going to have a harvest of corn, no matter how badly you wish it to be so. When you plant peas, that’s what you get. Peas. When you plant corn, that’s what you get. Corn.
When Caleb was forty years old, he was selected along with eleven other men to spy out the Promise Land at Moses’ direction. When these twelve men returned, only Joshua, Moses’ assistant and the one who would take his place, and Caleb gave a good report of the land. As a result, Moses pronounced a blessing over Caleb that day concerning his inheriting the land he had visited and it becoming his and his children’s forever. What a promise!
Who would have imagined after receiving a specific word from the Lord straight from Moses that it would be forty-five years later before that promise was fulfilled? Forty of those years he and Joshua wandered in the wilderness until an entire generation died except for the two of them. They were surrounded by grumbling and complaining, discontent and often disobedient brethren. All the while, all they saw around them was wilderness and more wilderness.
So, what made the difference for Caleb and Joshua? Why did they receive what God had promised them when everyone else from their generation died in the wilderness? Because they lived every day as if the promises God made them were all true. What do you get when you think and say and act like God is not faithful or that He does not love you or care for you? That’s what you get! Joshua and Caleb wholly followed the Lord God of Israel and look where it got them!
You might wonder sometimes if it is worth it, following the Lord and believing His promises — living each day like the Word of God is true, because it is. Thinking and saying and acting like God is faithful and that He loves you and cares for you. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, when you follow the Lord, He will perform His Word. That’s what you get!
