The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalms 23:1-2
It’s hard to imagine how great your heavenly Father’s love is toward you. To be called a child of God even though you have no right to such a wonderful blessing and could never be good enough to earn it. Yet, He loves you so much, He sent Jesus to be the Way, your Way, to the Father.
Everyone’s natural family experience is obviously different, some may have grown up in what would seem like in most every respect a perfect family. Of course, in this life there are no perfect families because there are no perfect people! Still, by and large, their experience was mostly positive.
Many others, sadly, have grown up in less than favorable familial circumstances and some even rising to the level of tragic. You cannot choose your natural family and many times cannot change the circumstances that come with it (at least until you are old enough to have your own family) but everyone has a choice to become a part of God’s family by receiving salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
So, what is it like, being a part of the family of God? Jesus gives us two wonderful word pictures — a little child and a sheep. Both have some commonalities, like their need to be cared for and provided for and protected. To put it another way, without someone watching over them, neither a little child or a sheep would survive in this world. Thus, we come to these verses from what is undoubtedly the most beautiful of all the Psalms.
David had experienced these truths in both realms; as a shepherd, he knew what dangers and needs the sheep faced every day. And, as a child of God, he knew what it was to be under His divine protection and provision. He recalled to King Saul some of his potentially deadly encounters with predators as a shepherd and the Bible is full of God’s protection and provision over His son, David.
Being a part of God’s family, being a child of Almighty God means that you will never lack what you need. The Lord will provide all of your needs as you walk with Him and put your trust in Him. He will lead you in the paths of righteousness and to the place of His blessing. There will be challenges and even dangers along the way for there is an enemy who seeks to devour any of God’s sheep that make themselves available to him, but he can never snatch you out of the Good Shepherd’s hand.
Stay close to the Shepherd, walk in obedience to His Word, and you will be provided for so abundantly that you will lie down in those green pastures for a nap and the waters will be still and peaceful. You will be satisfied from above.
It is your Father’s good pleasure to give of His Kingdom to you. He wants to give good gifts to His children. So, the bottom line is, as God’s sheep, you shall not want!
