You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Psalms 23:5
It is amazing how easy it is to become discontent. It seems as quickly as we receive something good or accomplish something, it is no longer enough. And, like Peter, there is that tendency to look around at others and ask the Lord, “What about him or her?” The Apostle Paul exhorted his spiritual son, Timothy that godliness with contentment was something worth having.
Should we not aspire to greater things? Once having reached the summit, are we not to find higher mountains to climb? Yes, by all means keep climbing. It’s not a matter of complacency or a lack of determination but rather the condition of the heart along the way on this journey up the next mountain.
There is the age-old question about the glass that is half-filled with water, or is it a glass of water that is half-empty? Is this a glass that started out with nothing and at least is now half-full or was it a full glass that now only contains half as much as it started out with? Now we come to it. Without the Lord, you have nothing and everything good in your life is from Him so, you always have plenty to rejoice in and to be thankful for.
How much different and fuller your life would be if you went through each day with your cup overflowing. Instead of always thinking about what you don’t have, rejoicing in what you have been blessed with. Sure, there will always be things that could be different and maybe better, but that does not mean that things are not good where the Lord is concerned. Don’t concentrate on what’s not in your glass but rather rejoice in what is there.
If you take time to consider all of the blessings in your life, you will see it is indeed an overflowing cup full! And something else will happen along the way — you will find a new sense of contentment. Again, it will not be complacency so that you stop climbing, but rather a rest for your soul along the way. You are striving to press on, not to obtain something just for the sake of obtaining it and, even before you scale that next mountain, you have a peace and joy that is beyond words.
Perhaps things are not yet where you would like for them to be in your personal life or at work or maybe with your family. Until now, all you could see is the half-empty glass. But now, the Lord is helping you to see these things in a different light. To see the abundance of God’s blessing upon you and your family. Whereas before, you always saw the lack, now you rejoice in an overflowing cup of blessing and provision.
God never intended for you to go through life with a half-empty glass. Jesus came that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly. Enjoy the goodness of God and rejoice in all He is doing in your life. Take a fresh look at things and see that half-empty glass begin to overflow. Don’t listen to words of lack or allow those half-empty thoughts to have room in your mind. Confess what God says, your cup is overflowing!
