I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” Psalms 91:2
Words are more important than they sometimes seem. Since you can’t really see words, their significance can be overlooked. But even though they can’t be seen, you can see the effect they have on your life and on the lives of others. In Proverbs we see that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Jesus taught us that we are justified or condemned by our words. Suffice it to say, words are important.
God could have chosen to create everything through any means for, after all, He is God! He chose to create by speaking. When God said, “Let there be light.” There was light. It is at the same time simple and profound. If you could have seen those days of creation, it would have been beyond awesome to see God create all there is in the natural world without lifting a finger. Everything just came into being! But it was not a matter of God doing nothing, it was a matter of God creating through a force that cannot be seen — His words.
Even today, this principle has not changed; the strongest forces at work in this world are not those which can be seen. You can see the effect they have in life but not the things themselves. The greatest three things in life are faith, hope and love yet you can’t see either of these three, even though you know when they are present. How? You see the effect they have on the one who has them as well as on others who are touched by that person’s faith, hope or love.
If you can’t see these three then how are they manifested? One of the ways they bear fruit in your life is through your words. If you have faith in your heart, it will come out in your words. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The same with hope, it will change your vocabulary from negative to positive. You actually change your environment when you change your words. There is still creative power in words today just as it was in the beginning.
So, what do you say to that? The Psalmist made four very powerful confessions about the Lord. This was not wishful thinking or empty, desperate cries from the depths of despair, this is faith and hope and love talking. To claim God as your refuge and fortress is not being presumptuous for the Lord has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. Every day, you can say that He is your refuge and fortress, a place of rest and safety and protection. Rather than waste your words on the problems at hand, confess the solution — God!
The next confession has to do with the greatest force of all; love. Confess that God is your God. He is not just out there somewhere but He is right there with you even through the storm because He loves you with an everlasting love.
Because of your confidence in His love for you and His protection and provision in your life all day every day, you can go through each day speaking words of life, words of faith and hope, words of God’s love for you. You can put your trust in Him. What do you say to that?
