The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10
There are many dangers in this world, and the more you are aware of at least a small portion of them, the more challenging it is to always be at peace in your soul. Children do not come into the world with this knowledge and thus are easily able to sleep the sleep of the innocent, as it were.
Without being taught about love, they feel love and, along with that love, they feel safe. No, they are not yet able to articulate it, at least not in a language that is intelligible. But they know it to be so because it is a part of who they are; who they were created to be. That is one of the reasons why we, as God’s children are referred to as just that — His children. We find a place of rest and refuge, of safety, in His presence.
Unfortunately, it is easy to “outgrow” that place of love and safety. Just as children begin to grow and sometimes mistake that growth for a lack of need for help from anyone and can even think of their tiny bit of newly acquired “knowledge” as being the sum total of all knowledge that has ever been known by anyone in the world up until that very day. In short, children sometimes forsake the safe place the Lord provided for them and, in their self-sufficiency, go through years of life (or even the rest of their life) the hard way.
It can also happen to Christians, starting off basking in the glory of your Savior and resting in His love and care for you, it is easy to begin to drift away from His loving arms and into the waiting arms of the world. Anyone would have to wonder why someone would leave such a wonderful, loving Father just to be a part of the world. The same could be said of a child who grows up and replaces their loving home with a world devoid of love or care for them.
The children of Israel lived through a time that illustrates this as well as any other. When the Lord was about to deliver them from the bondage of their life in Egypt, He sent plagues upon the Egyptians by the hand of Moses. One by one, the plagues came, and all the while God’s people were safe in the land of Goshen. This was a part of Egypt that had been given to Joseph for his family to settle in and they remained there throughout the generations until the time of Moses. When God began to send the plagues, He declared that He would make a distinction between the land of Goshen and the rest of Egypt for this was the land where His people dwelt. They were safe there, even though Egypt was all around.
Then came the last plague, when it was not enough just to be in the right place, they also had to have the blood of the lamb sprinkled on the doorposts and lintels of their house to be safe. And so it is today as a child of God.
You always have a safe place, for you have been given the name above all names — Jesus. By His blood as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world you are covered and protected. To put it another way, you are always safe in the arms of the Lord!
