Where is the Lord in Times of Trouble?

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. Psalms 91:15

The word trouble, as it is used here, refers to being in a tight spot, adversity, a distressing situation. In other words, things aren’t really going well. So, where is the Lord during those times when you could really use His help? The presence of trouble is not an indication of the lack of God’s presence any more than things going great being proof of His presence. Even though God is good all the time, in the flesh no good thing dwells and this world is, without a doubt filled with trouble.

All of that adds up to trouble somewhere along the way on this journey of life. For some, it may seem like an all-too-regular occurrence while others appear to have a much more trouble-free life. But, when it’s all been said and done, trouble is one of the ingredients of which this life is made. The good news, for those who love the Lord and are the called according to His purpose is that He works all things together, and good will always come out of it in the end.

Joseph was really loved by his father, but he was hated by his brothers. He had a special gift from God and a special place in God’s plan for His people. That did not, however, keep him from trouble. Joseph seemed to be a trouble magnet! Wherever he was, trouble seemed to find him. Sold as a slave by his brothers and then falsely accused by his master’s wife, Joseph finds himself not only separated from his father and the land of his fathers, but also a prisoner.

When looking at a life so full of trouble, one may be inclined to suppose that Joseph was outside of God’s will and was just getting what was coming to him. But for those of us who have the advantage of the perfect vision of hindsight, we know that not only was Joseph not forsaken by God, he was right where the Lord wanted him to be. Joseph was about to become a very valuable part of Pharaoh’s life and, as a result, become the second most powerful person in all of the kingdom.

In today’s verse, you can see clearly how to deal with those troublesome days. First, do what you do (hopefully) every day — call upon the Lord. This is a formula for life, not just for times of trouble. Most people will resort to calling upon the Lord if they get in a tight spot, but as His child, it should be a part of your everyday life.

And what happens when you call upon the Lord? He will answer you! God has not forsaken you no matter how things look at any given moment. He is always with you even in times of trouble, especially in times of trouble. It is during those times when you need the Lord more than ever that He shows Himself strong on your behalf. He will deliver you, perhaps not out of the situation but for sure through it. And one more thing: God will honor you!

So, where is the Lord in times of trouble? He is right there with you, even in the midst of the storm, Jesus is with you. Even at midnight He is there. He delivers you through it!
