But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28
It’s beyond even imagining how awesome it was for Adam, walking with God in the cool of the day, naming all of the animals, seeing God’s creation just as He intended it to be. Living in the world God created with just the Creator and then with his wife freshly created from one of his ribs. Now just the two of them in the midst of a beautiful garden that included even the tree of life!
What about Enoch? His walk with God was so extraordinary that one day the Lord just took him. Think of Noah, living in a world literally filled with evil and even in the midst of all that darkness he and his family lived a life that was pleasing to God, and when it came time for their ark adventure, the Lord brought the animals to him and then shut the door of the ark for them when they were all inside. The only family on earth to survive the flood.
There are so many other examples of people being blessed beyond measure that cannot be mentioned here, but surely Abraham and Sarah can have a line or two: multiple divine visitations and an everlasting covenant. Being blessed with a son when they were well beyond the normal time of child-bearing. Having their names changed by the Lord.
Moses was on a mountain and met God in a bush that was on fire yet not consumed. Later he was on a mountain with the Lord and received two stone tablets on which had been written the Ten Commandments in God’s own hand. Twice. God’s relationship with Moses was like no other. The Lord even had a private funeral for Moses when he died!
David went from being a shepherd to a giant-slayer to a king. But more than all of that, he was a man after God’s own heart. He experienced the presence of God in such a personal and real way that the tabernacle he prepared for the Ark of the Covenant was just a tent. God promised David a kingdom that would never end since it would eventually be ruled by Jesus himself! On top of all of this, David received God’s covenant of mercy. Surely there is no doubt that these brethren were all blessed beyond measure.
But with all of these examples, none would seem to compare with Mary in that stable giving birth to the King of Kings and those days and weeks and months that followed, nursing Him as a child. This was the exclamation from a woman in the crowd listening to Jesus’ teaching. She more than likely knew the blessing of bearing and nursing her own children and thought there could be no greater blessing. But there is.
Jesus said there is a way you can be even more blessed than that; hear the Word of God and keep it. You can be blessed beyond belief right where you are without any, “if only this” or “if only that” standing in the way. Sure, there have been some people throughout the history of the world that have had extraordinary encounters with the Lord, but that does not compare with the blessing God has for you right now. You have God’s Word; choose to keep it and you will experience His blessing. Every time. So — keep it!
