God’s Amazing Love

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:7-8

Even though you cannot see God, there is much you can be sure of about His attributes because of the Word of God. He has made Himself known to you through His Word. For instance, concerning the power of God there is no doubt that it is limitless; He is omnipotent. There is nothing that God cannot do. Not only is His power revealed in the Bible, it is also clearly seen in everything He has made. Just a quick look around or up and you see God’s creation declaring His glory, and His infinite power.

How about God’s knowledge and understanding? Again, perfect and complete. God has all knowledge, not only of the past and present but also of the future. He created everything and He knows everything about everything! Add to that His character — He is perfect and righteous and holy in all of His ways. In a word, the Lord is completely perfect.

Wouldn’t it be easy to love someone who was perfect? Oh, there may be those who, from a distance or at first glance, seem to be perfect but then, upon closer inspection you realize they are at least a little shy of the mark! Of course, there are none living or who have ever lived, save Jesus Himself, who are actually perfect. There are not even any who are righteous when compared to God.

In today’s verses, Paul begins by referring to the likelihood of someone being willing to sacrifice their life for another and he mentions two scenarios; a righteous man or a good man. In other words, it is easier to love someone and to be willing to sacrifice for them if they seem to be worthy of it in some way. The easier someone is to love the more likely you are to love them. But how about God’s love for you? What have you done to deserve His love?

Like everyone else, you do not have a perfect past. You may have even been one of those who ran from the Lord! At any rate, it would not seem likely that a perfect, holy, all-powerful and all-knowing God would chase after you to show you how much He loves you. Yet He did just that. It’s relatively easy to talk about love and to say the words but it’s quite another thing to show your love.

The Lord knew you in your sin and still He loved you. He knew you in your imperfections and weaknesses and still He loved you. He found you in your darkest time and illuminated your life with the light of His love. He didn’t just tell you He loved you, He demonstrated His love toward you. When Jesus took up that cross and made the grueling climb up the hill called Golgotha, it was a demonstration of His love for you.

Before you knew him, He knew you. Before you were ever born, He knew your name. Before you loved him, He loved you. Even when you hid from him, you were never out of His sight. And, when you sought him, He let you find him. That’s God’s amazing love!
