That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. John 1:9
As John begins his epistle, he goes back to the beginning of time and reveals some specifics as to Jesus’ role in creation. One feature that stands out as you consider the first few verses of Genesis is that the earth, when it was first created, was covered in darkness. That is the default for the world in both a physical and spiritual sense today, for darkness exists when there is the absence of light.
When it comes to the natural world, God spoke light into the darkness on day one and then on the forth day set the sun in the firmament to rule the day and the moon and stars to light up the night. God created days and months and seasons and years for mankind’s sake and He gives us a breakthrough from the dark of the night as each new day dawns. What a blessing to know that, no matter how hopeless things may seem in the dark, you always have the assurance that the sun’s coming up in the morning and with it all the potential of the day ahead.
So why is darkness the default in the physical world? Because that’s what the world started with — until God spoke light into the darkness. Without God’s presence and His Word upholding all things, it would be right back where it started; in darkness. That brings us to the spiritual default condition which is also darkness. Since God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, the absence of God’s presence is also the absence of light. And where does that leave someone who does not have God in their life? In darkness.
It is noteworthy that the more enlightened a society is said to be, the further away from the Lord and His truth they are. Of course, the opposite is true; the more a society (or community or home or even individual life) is established according to God’s eternal truths, the more enlightened they truly are. Swapping light for darkness and calling evil good is nothing new but has been going on for many generations.
Education or social refinement does not bring light to mankind. You could have all of the knowledge and refinement this world has to offer and still be in total darkness (and there are multitudes in that very place right now to one degree or another). The world has no light to give, only darkness. The good news is that God did not intend for His creation to remain in darkness. Just as He lit up the physical world from day one, He desires that mankind dwell in the light of His presence.
Jesus brought the life of God into the world of men and with that life came the light — the True Light. Anyone who seeks Him will find Him and with His presence comes true enlightenment. The darkness will still be all around, but wherever a child of God goes, so goes the light of the world.
You are the light of the world. Never be intimidated by those who fancy themselves enlightened, rather always remember there is only one Source of light in this world and it comes from the One who spoke light into the darkness on day one – the True Light!
